touchy subject this...try giving them a call, a washing machine should last for longer than a year...sale of good act is there but unless you willing to go to court very little you can do apart from rely on good customer services....got nothing to loose if you call em...good luck

as above argue sale of goods act and fit for purpose, as again as above a washing machine should definitely last longer than yours has

Hmm, I hate washers, how many I have had break down outside of the warranty period is a complete pain. Makes me wonder if renting one would actually save money in the long run?

You should be able to find a washer repair man online for your area, they usually are pretty good and much cheaper than a replacement.

Sales of Goods act a joke. Should be a minimum 3 year warranty with all goods.

its not the act thats a joke, its the fact that consumer direct/trading standards won't make the retailer honour it. they always tell you that you're covered under the act but cannot get "involved" then the retailer tells you to take them to court. all it would take is for trading standards to start enforcing the act and the retailers would start complying with it

Depends what is wrong with it- does it have a fault code?

    whats the problem with it.
often the wife says the washing machine is broke but its normally something silly like the drainage pump needs clearing out or the waste pipe is blocked

When you got the washing machine delivered you should have removed the timer at back, expensive lesson.

That's what makes the act a joke. It seems deliberately ambiguous and overly complicated for what should be, for the consumer, a simple and helpful thing. It's difficult to enforce and relatively unknown.

say you were lured into buying the machine by one of their staff who touched you in the private areas, and that you want a replacement or you'll take it to court.

thats the problem with stuff like this, how on earth can you say that?
What if the OP has 9 kids and washes 4 times a day, that would be about 10 years normal use for some people. On the other hand the OP might only do washing once a fortnight, but as you don't know how can you say it hasn't lasted long enough?

the problem is it wont drain. having looked up on the internet it seems to a blocked pump. i might be able to repair it but i wouldn't want to try i would probably make it worst making it more expensive to get it repaired

sadly this doesn't apply to me

Remember under EU law an electrical item should last atleast 2 years I believe but you will have to look into it. Most retailers aren't even aware of the law.

Worth a read as might help.

A lot of washing machines come with 2 year warranties from the manufacturers anyway don't they? Mine did I am pretty sure.

Call Consumer Direct - they are professionals and will give you the correct info.

I assume you have unscrewed the access on the front of the machine and pulled out the filter and cleaned. You will need a few towels to catch the water. It is a maintenance part of owning a washing machine.

you need to clean out the pump filter it may be under the bottom pannel

also check the waste pipe it may sound gross but get someone put something round the end and give it a good blow .
also when you removed the filter did the machine empty more as may be blocked just above the filter.

thats because its a directive, not law, and has only partially been adopted into uk law.
