yes, can't get a definitive answer so far

Our phones are unlocked! Most of the phones we sell aren't locked to a network, including almost all of our SIM free phones. That means you can put any UK SIM card into your phone and enjoy the benefits of whichever UK network you prefer.
Exceptions: iPhone is unlocked when you buy it SIM free but Apple's software means it locks to the first network you use it with.

    Yes IT IS.
    They're supplied unlocked.
As it states, an iPhone is unlocked to use whichever network you choose, after which it AUTOMATICALLY locks due to Apple's software.
It has nothing to do with CW, and will happen to an iPhone bought anywhere.

Original question has no mention of iphone.

So brusque... However, this piqued my interest.

Hence, here is (what is on the face it is) a comprehensive answer: Fully unlocked iPhones can only be bought sim free from Apple, John Lewis, giffgaff, and Three.

Carphone warehouse sells iPhone and they are unlocked at the point of sale. The same as many other companies. You are buying an unlocked iPhone from carphone warehouse.

Now the apple software (nothing to do with CW) will lock the iphone to the first sim you use.

Exactly. Unless fone is the new term for iPhone! Ops tone is so rude.

I purchased the iPhone 7 recently from carphonewarehouse and it's true they do lock to the 1st sim, this only applies to iPhones. I put a 3 sim in it and it locked itself to 3. I called 3 for it to be unlocked only to be told by them that they don't lock phones anymore and it should already be unlocked. I rung up about three times to get the phone unlocked. Each time they kept saying it's CPW and contact them to unlock it. Finally got through to someone with a little sense, they said send proof of purchase from CPW which I did, then finally it was fully unlocked after 24 hours. Now accepts any sim. I would really stay away from CPW iPhones as they can be a pain to unlock in the future.

yes, it looks like giffgaff is easiest or johnlewis for two year g'tee.

iPhones from Apple direct are fully unlocked to any network even after your first SIM card has been used.

    That's where I buy all my rabbit's.
