I want a DVD player with a USB slot that can plays avi. files - where do I start, please?

Found 25th Feb 2011
Hi everyone.

I have an old CRT tv in our bedroom, our aerial reception is rubbish and the thingy that is supposed to send our Sky signal upstairs drives me mad, so am considering putting a DVD player up there so we can actually use the TV LOL!
I know there are DVD players that have a USB slot, but how do I know if it plays avi. files - is that what DivX is or is that something entirely different?
Would really appreciate some help before I buy the wrong thing! x x x

P.S. Can anyone recommend one they've actually bought or is worth buying? I only want something cheap

Thank yous x x x

I have one of these, it says upscaling but that wouldn't matter if you are running it from a scart (but helpful if you get a better tv later).

AVI is sometimes referred to as Divx and Xvid as it's all to do with the containers and other technical stuff you don't need to worry about. Most TV shows are in AVI format and many movies are as well.

I used to have a DIVX DVD player, a Philips DVP5960, it would play all data files off dvds/discs & USB stick...

Something like this....

amazon.co.uk/Phi…1-2

I bought that philips bluray player from Ebay for £45 from techfurb, might be back on again at some point.

It had USB, Upscales to 1080P, players all different files. ANd you get a bluray player into the bargain too

Are you bothered about the DVD player or do you just want something to play films from a USB stick?

Don't want the DVD's at all, tbh - just the USB playback, is there such a thing then?

Thanks so far everyone, the Philips one looks like the obvious choice, though I was hoping to spend about £30 max

Ooh, is this the same one? It looks the same but doesn't mention USB
Argos

Edit: Oh the reviews say it does - sorted?

I would look for something along the lines of the link that dcx has posted. If your just looking for a simple usb device that connects to your scart you can probably find one for about £15.

Thats why I asked because if you don't need the actual DVD player, then obviously the price will go down. Have you got an xbox or ps3?

just google man its all there for everyone to use ffs

Misc is also here for everyone to use, and anyone has the right to ask for information and advice. If you do not want to help the OP... do one

Waste of money really, well over and above what the OP needs.

I have found this as an option for you, I would contact the seller and ask them if it will play AVI. My cheap xenta usb dvd player didn't state that it did but it has managed to play every video file that I have thrown at it.

Small and compact, it is also a freeview reciever and you can record TV to a USB device as well.

Ok, sorry - it only mentions HDMI, not scart so I assumed it didn't
