If a dog comes in your garden and kills your cat, is there anything you can do about it?

This happen to a friend over the weekend and the police don't want to know and have said all they can do is give the owners of the dog a warning! What a joke. If a dog is capable of going into a private property and murdering a cat, what if it was a child? Any advice appreciated. Rep given...Oops. Likes given. Thanks.

I'm not sure, but personally I suppose that you can go around the garden and fix any holes in the fence so the dog can't get into your garden.
Maybe contact the RSPCA for advice, but I would assume the Police knew what they were saying with only being able to give a warning to the owner of the dog.
If it was your cat, I hope you're ok.

Don't all local councils have a dog warden? Maybe they could give some advice - they would know about laws concerning dog control and nuisance I would think.

Do you have a zoo nearby? Any P00 from a big cat will deter ALL cats from your garden and it does work. Just around the perimeter, good fertiliser too.

No John, I'm not comparing a child to a cat, I'm saying this dog COULD have attacked a child. See difference? Thanks.

Oooh. Super.... Replace next doors kitty pooh with a Lions pooh. I dont want **** in my garden. I want cat owners to use litter trays and be resposible owners. Not too much to ask is it?

No it was once again you going off topic

OP couple of years ago our dog was viciously attacked by two rotties that had been left outside our village shop .............not tied up, just left. Anyway the police said that unless its another human thats been attacked there isnt anything that can be done other than a warning

Wrong I know, but thats what we were told. Karma played a hand a while later when one of the rotties attacked the owners wife quite viciously and the dog was destroyed.

I'd like to disagree. The police have a lot of paperwork to do and tend to fob off the 'small' cases until it becomes a big case. So I don't go off their initial response.

I agree. Its a horrible thing to have happened and to think that nothing is going to get done makes it so much worse

Probably not..... Most cat owners dont give a monkeys that their cat craps in their neighbours garden, then moan when Fido chases them.

Not sure what advice you need OP. This might be useful.

If the law is the same here in Scotland, then I doubt it. As I said earlier, they only take a serious view if a human has been attacked

Thanks for the info. I do think its wrong and they're calling RSPCA and local council tomorrow,,,

For killing a cat? Of course not, it was just doing a natural thing. Should you terminate your cat when it brings a bird, mouse, frog etc. into your home?

How did the dog get in? Cos dogs dont tend to jump fences like a cat would.

We had the same in our block of flats two years ago but when the cat owner called the RSPCA, they were told to report it to the police but wouldn't cos they the cat owners) weren't law abiding citizens so didn't want the police involved. Dog went on to kill another cat! Still nothing done. Sorry it's not helpful but I got the impression the police couldn't or wouldn't do anything unless it is a persistent offender.

its unfortunate for friend but at end of the day they are both animals so nothing you can do its instict unless they have been domesticated with a cat in the family

I understand your reasoning but I doubt a cat could go on to mauling a child (like this dog could potentially) but thanks for your input.

P.S. I think it snuck through the side gate.

Hate pets of all kinds, cats being the worst of them all.

I am actually quite scared of cats - terrified in fact - but would never want something like that to happen to one

If I knew which dog it was and I was genuinely concerned that it was a danger to the public and other animals, I'd bait it, and shoot it through the skull with my crossbow. Wouldn't particularly enjoy it, but I utterly despise staffies (and it was a staffie, wasn't it?), and anything that dangerous and unrestrained needs to be dealt with since, yeah, it could well be an ickle baby next time.
