If i were to buy a SKY HD box would i have to pay the £10 extra for Sky Sports?

Was thinking about buying a used SKY HD box from someone whos just switched to Virgin. Want it for the bigger hard drive and of course to watch the world cup in HD.

Just wondering though, i've cancelled my Sky Sports Subscription over the summer til the footy starts back and if i wanted to get it back on using the HD box, would i HAVE to pay the extra £10 for Sky Sports HD even if i said i dont want Sky Sports HD i just want Sky Sports?

No, it's not mandatory but you wont get any HD channels aside from BBC HD, ITV1 HD and Channel 4 HD.

Well that would be fine by me, just dont want to be forced into paying an extra tenner.

Would like the bigger hard drive though.

Well that's advantageous really, because you'll get far more recording time out of it if everything is in SD, as opposed to HD which is at least twice as big. To be honest, you'll probably find there's enough HD content on those three channels alone to keep you occupied anyway!

Would I need an engineer to replace my standard box for a sky+ hd?

When I had the sky dish installed the engineer used one cable from the dish to the box.. The end which goes to the box has 2 connectors exactly the same.. :?

So your standard box must be a Sky+ box then? The old basic boxes only had a single feed, in which case some work would need to be done by you or an engineer- but if you've got a dual feed then I believe you should be okay.

Sky plus is dual feed so no probs with the hd box and recording hd content actually uses about 4 1/2 times more space than standard...ie 40 min program takes up 3 hours (well on a V+ box anyway).

Was in exact same situation as you, now got sky hd box up and running with no hd pack, been watching the world cup on bbc hd (itv hd was showing adverts yesterday!!!) and I am happy with it. All you need to do is replace existing box with new box and phone up sky to pair card, I didnt think I needed to at first as my card worked, but then I had some problems with recording but all is fine now

The end of the cable which goes to the back of the box has two connection like this on the picture but the box is only using one. I don't know what the other one is for.

So would it be ok to just buy the sky hd box to replace this one or I would be wasting my money?

You should be fine if you have the two wires, you will be able to install the new box yourself

Is SKY+ still charged at £10 or is it free? if its charged then theres no point not changing to HD sub since it would cost the same.

    Sky+ is free, Sky+HD is £10/month extra.

I was ripped off last year then as my old sub ran out July last year and I told them I no longer owned a hd tv and didnt use the record function apart from about once a month when 2 programmes are on at once that I want to see and delete it right after watching and she told me that it would cost the same to go to Sky+

I have had Sky+ for over a year and never paid any extra for it, and it wasn't a new customer bonus or anything, they just stopped the charge ages ago. There did used to be a £10 charge, but not for a few years afaik.

As long as you were subscribing to the minimum package (1 pack, £18p/m), then Sky+ should have been free. They should only charge you a tenner a month for Sky+ functionality if you are using the box as a Freesat from Sky box (only receiving basic freeviews channels, basically).

Thats what I thought though with that account Sky owe me like £90 since I had no sub for 3 months and they still kept taking money out and more like £120 since I logged in recently after not checking since November to find they have been charging me for a non existant sub for a flat I moved out of last August! Bet the current tenant is enjoying his free sky tv.
