get yourself a portfolio of 35 companies shares, in different sectors, and types.
    That = lowest possible risk

    Unless...
You diversify internationally, and that will lower your risk further.

not really. DYOR and all that. Would hate to have influenced someone on a seriously high risk strategy.

There's plenty of good places to start like LSE.co.uk and iii.co.uk for research

If you can get a mortgage, put a chunk of it down as a depo on a flat and let it. The rent should cover the mortagage and you'll have a (slowly) appreciating asset. You'll thank me lots in a few years time.

Otherwise, I'd keep £25k in cash - you can put £3600 in a cash ISA now and £5100 in in April (new tax year).
Put another £3600 now in an equity ISA e.g. Jupiter Income and another £3600 in April. The rest I would buy shares with in 3 or 4 UK companies e.g. Barclays, Tesco, Barratt Housing, Cable & Wireless. Couple of grand max in Premium Bonds.

Been years since me or any of my family have won anything off premium bonds :x

The maximum holding in premium bonds is £30,000

The annual prize fund interest rate is 1.5%. Sure you might win a big prize, but the odds are more likely you'll get run over by a bus...

I've just invested a lot (for me!) in Desire Petroleum, wish me luck!

A portfolio of 35 shares in different sectors and types would not be classed as a low risk investment, and definitely not a 'lowest possible risk'.

Diversify internationally could increase the risks, due to exchange rate fluctuations. Don't take financial advice from anyone on HUKD, seek independent financial advice from an authorised firm.

35 companies is way too many as well, you'd pay a lot in commission to your broker and I'd stay away from overseas shares exactly for the reasons above.

You can log your portfolio on ]moneyextra.com (use any name, click on portfolio) and it will keep a live update of share and fund prices and calculate your worth. I use it, it's a great tool.

Man above is right about taking advice from people on here. Apart from me

]Desire Petroleum mmmmmm. Be careful, rumours about oil discoveries often come to nowt.

desire petroleum is a punt if the rns ie they find enough commercial oil then this share could go at £40 a share when at the moment its just under a pound.Do you feel lucky but just make sure you do your own research and take most of what you read on bulletin boards with a pinch of salt as there are many rampers/derampers out there.

It will never reach £40 a share...there's a chance, and a good one at that, it can reach £10-£12 over the next 12 months, maybe even £20 if it can avoid takeover

Hmm so at the moment buying 10000 shares roughly £10,000 inc stamp duty and charges you could pick up £120,000 doesnt sound to bad to me ;-)
