could be ) seen in bury st edmunds, thought herons were more coastal birds, but bury not far from coast anyway, i thought it maybe some type of crane but too small for them.

I'm about as inland as you can get and there are always herons around the rivers near me

It's an heron, they live inland. They steel fish out of people's ponds ;).
