Im fuming!! this is just plain stupidity!

15 year old son designed a garden for the local primary school as a school climate project-the idea is that it encourages people to take a pride in their local area, adults and kids alike have planted it and maintain it. It was a piece of wasteland which he talked the council into giving over,he got all funding himself, donations from b and q,asda, tesco etc etc.

earlier in the year the british council made him "british climate champion" and he went to birmingham to recieve his award.

now our local council have written to say he is being awarded their outstanding achievement award for community service and he has to attend the ceremony with "one guest only" this is in a theatre that holds 200 people.

called them today to ask why mrs barky and myself cant both attend to see him get his award-they say its impossible-20 people getting awards in various categories with one guest each=40 people. And the other 160 people in attendance? "local councillors and dignitaries!!"

so 2 years work by a 15 year old and he single handed gets a huge project off the ground and he has to choose which parent to take to the awards ceremony because of 160 freeloaders on a council jolly??

    barky is furious!

    well done

wow thats not fair tell local papers get them involved bless who does he choose to take

Suck it up I say, most award ceremonies only allow you to take one guest. The fact you're both mad will only make your son feel bad.

I will insist mrs barky goes-its ridiculous he should choose-they should have got a bigger venue imho,or cut back on the councillors.

their excuse is that most people winning these awards are adults so will take their wife/husband/partner. That doesnt wash with me-they know his age,its a big achievement for him and they just wont budge.

    well done lil Barky

I thought of that, but the invites have seat numbers on them-its a local theatre,200 seats so someone else would appear with a ticket for any seat I may occupy.Dont think I would get away with it.

Why dont you speak to one of the invitees and see if they can swing it for you? Im sure you local MP (if they are invited) or mayor could be made to feel bad that you can go

or perhaps you could stand at the back and watch so you are still there but not with your head in the trough so to speak

someone is bound to not show

Get in touch personally with both the council leader and your local bod. One or the other will probably sort it for you. The functionary you spoke to won't have been able to do anything!
    Well done to your son.

Barky, I sympathise. I recently had to go to London for an award ceremony and had to tell over half of my team they couldn't go. Yet when i got there some nominees went mob handed.

Some rules for others. But well done to your son. Too often we only hear about 15yr olds taking drugs and assaulting folk. He sounds like a budding social entrepreneur- get him signed up to the Prince's Trust business programme

    Let out that impotent rage:thumbsup:

just turn up anyway the chances are that not everyone will turn up meaning plently of space.

Write to your local rag, examining the essential expenditure of the tax payers' money denying you the right as a proud (tax paying) parent to attend your son's own day. I imagine you'll get another ticket. At least.

Same for Duke Of Edinburgh, only allowed 1 person when you go and meet whoever to collect your award.

good idea this barky ,you would be surprised what an msp/mp could swing, when the say jump the council say how high, serious.

what council is it barky, bet you i can ring up tomorrow and get you in the theatre

edit: congrats to ur kid also, is it the same one who did the marathon in under 3 hours?

I say just be proud of what your son has achieved, and then flip the Mrs for it (pick heads) :-D

congrats to your son, what a brilliant venture!

Similar thing happened with us, My OH was awarded his long service and good conduct medal and we were invited along as a family..........3 tickets only, I have 3 sons and the eldest wasnt able to go because of this, they were quite adamant. I appreciate they have to make sure the venue isnt overfilled, but I was annoyed at the amount of top brass there, unnecessarily IMO, yet one of our sons had to miss out on seeing his dad get his award.

    gate crash it.
just turn up as a pair with your son they will let you in..........
you can always say you didnt know...

oh and well done little barky.....

lol,no offence i always thought you were a man!

    dont know why ,sorry pal..

the award is for your son and as such he needs a guardian - if he was older you wouldnt have got a look in. Our council has 54 councillors and the other people that would have got an invite are probably other council councillors or local businesses and it will be used to try and drum up more business within councils and tradesmen - extra income or shared services will mean that your council tax will be kept low

if your son is vocal, get him to receive the award and then tell everyone he's very pleased to receive it but really disappointed that his mum / dad wasnt allowed to attend ......

Barky - if your son doesn't mind you creating a fuss - make yourself a notice-board and stage a protest outside the venue. Maybe one of the free loaders will feel guilty and give you their ticket or maybe with press being present (why else would the free loaders be there) the council will find space for you to avoid embarrassment........

    this, pretty much the norm.

meet up afterwards for a nice lunch

    Uh oh...

Someone's trying to jump on their sons achievements!

Tell the council you are in a wheelchair and need someone to push you; I'm sure they'll have a second ticket in today's post. I in no way mean to belittle or exploit those who genuinely are handicapped but you have more right to be at an award ceremony than those councillors looking for a photo opportunity.

    Just gate crash it

I have no problem with the OP, but this is a complete non-event. One guest be the rules, deal with it. Nothing wrong here at all.
