I'm getting a PS3, but which one? Phat or Slim?

I know there have been a lot of questions tonight about PS3's and Xbox's, so sorry if this one has already been answered.

I want a PS3 mainly for the Blu ray, but also for the streaming capabilities.

I have been offered a brand new 80gb Phat with Little Big Planet (box offer) for £180, so that seems a good deal. Or I can go for a slim 120 gb at about £230 (best price).

Is it worth the extra for the slim?

Thanks in advance.

are you a slim or phat type of guy?

Had this problem, went for the chunk

Why would you pay the extra £50?

I bought a slim for £185 brand new sealed...
250GB is £240 now OP @ ShopTO

Definitely worth it.

As far as i'm aware they both stream the same, and play Blu Rays the same.

Doesn't the slim have thermal problems at the mo ? or is it a rumour ? :?

I think the saint has a point. For what I need there is no point in paying the extra. Unless of course I can get a slim for £185 in the near future.

Cheers.

I got mine locally (only just got it today) alot selling for ATLEAST £200, seen lower too.
Ele-font also sold his for £180 delivered on here brand new sealed, But I guess that was a one off.

Doesnt this go back to the old discussion of... the slim uses less power thus costs less to run, but it also uses cheaper components so maybe? in time not as reliable (even though the phats arnt exactly brill lol).

If it were me id go for the phat... save yourself best part of £50... then go online to Play and buy yourself a 500GB WD Scorpio with the cash you have saved. Forget the streaming and just spool straight off the HDD ;-)

Remember when they came out and you were slagging the slims off, and I said one day youll get one, well now I can feel all smug.

In answer to the ops question, if you dont care about it being damn ugly, easily scratched, noisy, overheating, the large power consumption and the small harddrive, get the phat. If youre sensible, get the slim

That's exactly what I'm leaning towards. You can always rely on HUKD for good advice. Hey and nearly 1 page of posts with no fanboys. That's got to be a record!

I must of done at least 8 320GBs and 2 500GB PS3's now for my friends. All love them... they are the main part of their media centres. Just finished setting up a good m8s one with a 500GB over the weekend. Hes already now got over 150 albums on it and nearly as many movies. He doesnt play games at all lol !

So in that respect... and i think thats kinda what youre looking at... thats the route id choose. BUT if i had the cash for the slim and the HDD then ?????? who knows lol... only you can answer that ;-)

I never said that mate
I was the one that said in real life it looks better:thumbsup:

The interface is naff as is... ie one big list. But you can edit them if you spend a bit of time and put them in category folders... ie Kids, Horror, Music, Action etc etc. It makes it a little better to use rather than the big long list.

dont know about the slim

but the fans on the phat are very noisy, which can get quite annoying if you wanna play it late at night, you gotta turn your telly up louder just so you can hear it tidy

Not on all of them... its pure pot luck. The one i done over the weekend was dead quiet... and it was a 3 year old 40 GB. I could hardly notice it when switched on... even after an hours worth of use. My one ive got in the front room is like a jet engine when it gets going... but that was a refurb sent back under warranty - an EU model. However my daughters 80 GB one just under a year old is again very quiet. So i think it just depends on luck of the draw with the phats. Havent had a slim to muck about on yet though so cant comment.

My 40GB is quiet as a mouse too :-D

I was quite envious tbh LOL !

Go for the slim, defo. You won't need to upgrade the disk and it's QUIETER and uses less leccy.

My 80Gb phat is so noisy it p*sses me off at times:x

but does the 80gb come with a years warranty like the slim will?

and you can get a 120gb slim for £230 with a game you could get £25-£30 for so only £20 real difference. After you have played the game first of course as its the best game EVER!

I wish my 80gb one was quiet. Only a year old but approaching 360 noise levels at times! :w00t:

I sold my original 60Gb phat a few weeks ago and got a slim when Sainsburys were doing them for £199.

Nothing wrong with the 60Gb but the slim is less bulky, and a lot quieter/cooler running. You can still notice the fan at times under heavy load but it's not quite as noticeable as the 60Gb was. Do I miss the memory card slots, ps2 compatibility, extra usb ports? Nope

What the slim does have over the 60gb phat is hdmi control - it can now change the tv's av channel when powering on and also you can power on the ps3 via tv (at least you can on my Sony LCD)

What I do miss is the on/off power switch on the back although the slim uses a lot less power in standby.

^^^My 60GB switches over to the correct channel when I switch it on(Scart CRT).

How do you put them into folders?
That's the only thing that I wish was easier to do.
