Aww bless, thats a nice idea. I have bought a few wicker baskets from Tesco in the past for a number of my friends who have had babies. I normally layer the bottom with tissue paper and straw.
As for what to put personally i would put some traditional items such as a christmas pudding, christmas ale, shortbread, favourite chocolates or favourite tipple. I can reccommend M&S strawberry and pink champagne conserve, its lovely!

Some simple wicker baskets above from Wilkinsons, could pick it iup in store if you have one nearby, saves on postage

I have made a gift bag for my friends for xmas. Have put in it some M&S nuts in a tin, M&S Triangle dish/box of american flavoured snacks (pretzels, crisps etc) Bottle of wine, Box of Duchy organics chocs, Cranberry and orange xmas chutney, Turkish delight, Florentines & a xmas pudding.
Used a big silver gift bag, put shredded silver tinsel in the bottom and between items and put silver tissue paper over the top and taped bag together.
Hope this gives you some ideas.

Some cheap Thorntons would be a nice addition to any hamper, they have current deals on too online with good quidco returns also.

Just think about things they like as treats and then add the Christmas basic's too. Plus maybe a CD of music they would like and if they don't already buy it a copy of Radio Times, TV times or perhaps a book for them both. Something for the body and mind - that's the beauty of doing it yourself, you can personalise it for them. You could also take it to a local flower shop and ask them to wrap it in the cling film like stuff they use and a ribbon and bow.
