Im going to opt out, which you can do.]http//ne…stm

In odrer to opt out you have to give them your number which they may or may not already have. Maybe it would be better not to reveal this to them.

hmmm yeah you could be right. Surly they should have like land lines do, an ex directory option. Id be well unhappy if someone got hold of my mobile number without my consent.

cheers, i didnt know until today

privacy invasion get a life ,do what i do if someone call u dont know hang up they dont call back

Going to the website and reading through how it works, they don't actually give your number out. Someone calls them up, says 'I want to get the number for Bob blah in Lala land', and if they have a match, they send a text to Bob Blah with the contact details of the person trying to get hold of them, and it's then up to Bob Blah if he wants to call them or not. As long as that it all they do, then I'm not too bothered by it.

They do not have everyone's number. It is not like the telephone directory. They have gleaned numbers from many sources but as far as I know they have not obtained them from the providers. Stay private and do not give them your number unless you know that they already have it.

It is not the same. With a landline all numbers have traditionally been listed unless you go ex- directory. This is not the case with mobile numbers. People are used to having the choice whether they give out their mobile number or not. For this reason the new directory is seen by many as a violation of their privacy as they never gave their permission for the directory to have their mobile number in the first place. Why should they have to opt out of something that they didn't agree to?

P.S. - I think that this government has given us more than enough examples of why the 'nothing to hide' statement is utter nonsense. It has never been as important as it is now for us to protect our data and privacy. The only person that you can trust with your details these days is yourself.
