    im scottish and hate snp

both me and my wife work and consider ourselves lucky we earn less than 35k a year between us

but why are snp abolishing prescription charges?

fair enough if you earn less than a certain amount or are unemployed or on benifits, but i am more than happy to pay for presciption charges and always have been

id rather pay for presciptions and have the money put into protecting the nhs

why would they not be protecting the nhs as well?

Abolishing prescription charges sounds and looks good which I guess is the main reason for it although like you it's not something I mind paying for. I was annoyed that they abolished the tolls for the Forth Road Bridge after they spent years fitting a new automated toll system which has now all been demolished. Again it comes across as a move to look good publically, even though I travelled the bridge every day I didn't mind paying the toll as I used the bridge each day. It all looks a mess now as there's no money for the new bridge.

I would have thought that most people who are ill (with a few exceptions) are not at fault - but most don't mind contributing to the price of their medications.

exactly it's great and as long the nhs up here can afford to run it then I cannot see what the problem is.

Incidentally the snp have pledged to cut management in the nhs by 25% in the next 4 years with the cash saved to be pumped directly back into patient care (funding policies such as free prescriptions)

then you start on the slippery road to means testing for medical treatment and effectively doing away with the nhs as we know it.

furthermore even if you do start charging those could afford to pay you'd probably end up spending more on admin costs means testing everyone than you'd actually be recieving in fees.

It's well over due for perscription charges to be dropped.
I don't understand, you are moaning that you want to pay perscription charges!?
Obvisouly you have the money (which is good for you, you worked for it) to moan but I am with the majority of the population who struggle with these charges.

For instance I have a damaged nerve in my back along with a few other probs.
I take about 10 different tabs a day plus need injections every few months. The charges are £4 or £5 something per item so do the math. Is that not what NI insurance is for?
But there dones't seem to be much help out there for people like me, so that in it's own right makes me angry. I think the SNP are actually trying to do something for the majority of people in Scotland unlike the new goverment in place the now.
They moan that Britian has over spent funnily we have never seen or heard about this over the years. But yet MP's still have their outrageous wages are they going to take pay cuts? No chance

By the way.........the coalition MPs took a 5% pay cut recently. Also regarding the over spending............it's been in the news for years.

Nah. He just realises that something else will be cut to pay for it and that its a vote winning tactic for the gullible. It seems to be working!

I actually agree with the OP. I earn a decent salary and would be happy to continue paying for prescriptions when I need them - it's not a vast sum and can't actually remember the last time I had one.

Having an income threshold where people earning above it need to pay for prescriptions is a good idea, if any money raised is pumped directly back into the NHS, although I fear that won't happen.

Tbh, this whole thing for me is Alex Salmond just wanting to get his smug fat face on tv and his name in the news. It's all about self promotion for him. Remember his legal challenge because the SNP weren't inlcuded in the televised debates at the time of the election? All about him...

Prescription charges are a Tax on the Sick.

    They are morally indefensible.

They should never have brought in, and were one of the first attacks on the founding principles of the NHS.

I am beginning to think you are deliberately ignoring the alternative of just taxing MILLIONAIRES appropriately in the first place.

Anyone who saw the dispatches program on "how the rich avoid taxes" will have been made aware how unfair the system is in favour of the super rich. If governments cracked down on this, there would be plenty of money to fund free prescription charges.

If you take this argument to it's logical conclusion it would suggest you should only hit the poor with extra taxes as they are powerless already and will be able to do nothing about it.

So it seems as far a some are concerned the rich are above the law and thats ok?

Our government and others should be closing the tax loop holes instead of minister using them for their own fortunes. If there are countries sheltering these morally corrupt tax avoiders then they should have sanctions brought against them. If the rich had to stay in these "Tax Havens" and not allowed to step foot on European soil then maybe they would think again.

Seems you can always find somebody to attack people on benefits on HUKD, but suggest the rich pay their share and everyone starts losing control of their bowels.

That conclusion is only reached if you are a complete plum. The fact is, rich people WOULD leave if they were being excessively targeted as you suggest. The logical conclusion of that, is the poor WOULD end up paying more. Only a complete plum would want this!

Nope. I've already stated they need to close the loop holes that the super rich exploit with their teams of accountants. I guess you only read the bits you want to!

I don't go around attacking people on benefits and my bowels are fine. I do however see you are jealous and resentful of anyone who has made a success of their lives and earn more than you. that's actually rather sad and a poor attribute to highlight in public.

But its not my fault that your mum has asthma, so why should the public services I (hypothetically) use be limited because of her illness?

Sorry to be blunt, but its simplistic both ways. Personally, I think paying for prescriptions when you need them is a much fairer idea.

If you were born with a health condition or it appeared through no fault of your own that requires regular prescription drugs then they should be free.

However if it started through misuse of drugs, booze, food or due to you being a complete stupid git then you should have to pay.

So the SNP are proposing to do this for Economic or Political reasons? Oh right... its for both! ROTFLMFAO

Salmond is doing this to buy votes from gullible people. It's a political move. If you think its for economic reasons, I'll look forward to you explaining how so. Ecomomics and politics do go hand in hand. They are not "the same" apart from in your head.

I don't need to dig holes for you to fall in. You do that on your own! I suppose banning fox hunting was for economic reasons too?

I had to jump in on this one. I work in a chemist and a lot of people don't know you can get a PPC (Pre Payment Certificate) it lasts either 4 months or 12 months. Because they are abolishing the prescription charges, we can only sell the 4 month ones, but it saves people ALOT of money in the long run. I honestly think they should keep the charges, it is only £3. Its not a lot of money. Some medication costs ten times that, some medication can cost us £500/600 for one box of tablets, other things are cheaper but the majority of them are not, its the NHS that re-emburse us for each prescription item, and if no money is coming from Chemists then they have to rely on other methods for payments, then if the NHS is running low on money how are chemists to make money? OTC sales are not enough for chemists to run on, Superdrug and other stores can sell any GSL or OTC medication.
It also annoys me when people pretend to be exempt from charges aswell

    guv

I did said "Economics is politics."

I did NOT say "Politics is Economics."

How this and any government decides to run or alter the economy is ALWAYS a political decision.
