    I'm thinking dippy egg for breakfast .....

    Havent had one in ages. Its my day off and i thought i'd treat myself. I dont normally get up early enough for brekkie.
    But I cant run the risk of it coming out with an overcooked yolk tho
    ..... oh, the disappointment.

    Anyone got any fail safe methods?

    Yes - boil the water before adding the egg for 3 mins.

    Cut the top off ASAP to avoid over cooking

    Then add a little spoon of butter

    mmm, but i was saving my bacon .....

    ps, thats for a chicken egg - for a Duck egg, you want to boil for 5.5 mins

    Put The Egg In The Pan With Cold Water And As Soon As The Water Starts Boiling Time It For 3mins 10 Seconds

    yeah, ive used timers in the past but they are carp. I like my eggs with the white part very slightly on the sloppy side too :-D

    3 mins in boiling water, then take out of the water straight away to avoid overcooking. Some people suggest running it under cold water after taking it out of the boiling water, but I don't tend to do that

    I'm confused now, I think what i really need is to stay in bed and someone to come round and make it for me. They taste soooo much better done by someone else :thumbsup:

    all sounds good. wish i still had the very large eggs i bought in asda last wk, 4 of them had double yokes! would be dipping for hours!

    5 or 6 mins will overcook it x x x

    also add a teeny touch of olive oil to the water as the egg boils so that any tiny cracks in the shell wont effect how it cooks x x

    Are these instructions for eggs that have been stored in the fridge or at room temp?

    Putting a large, fridge-cooled egg in cold water & boiling for 5 mins gives a runny yolk from personal experience.

    I love dippy eggs. We have perfected the art now

    Make sure the eggs are at room temperature, then add them to a pot of really vigourously boiling water for one full minute. After a minute, remove the pan from the heat but keep the egg in the pan, put a lid on it, and leave to sit in the hot water. A medium egg needs 5 minutes like this, and a large one needs 6. The egg will be perfect - this is Delia's way and it works every time.

    ok, I used the 3 minutes straight into boiling water method ...... it came out a bit too runny but i think it was because the egg was from the fridge. It was yum tho. I reckon another 30 seconds to be added if straight from the fridge.
