    Importing laptop from USA

Has anyone imported a computer from outside the UK? I am told that there is no import duty (custom duty) for importing laptop into the UK. Is that true?

Also, can anyone suggest an economical and reliable parcel service to import from USA. Has anyone done so before and how was the experience?

I am planning on buying a vaio laptop with latest specs. For some strange reasons, Sony UK has much lower specs and very highly priced. As far as cheating is concerned, I am buying direct from Sony Style USA. (although cheaper models are available on ebay). I plan on getting them delivered to my mate's place in US and then arrange a collection either through parcel2go or interparcel or.....Believe me, it works out much cheaper importing from outside UK (taking into consideration ALL compatibility issues with respect to frequency and voltage etc).

    Problems:

Different keyboard (different countries use different keyboard positions for letters, numbers, special characters etc), They use the dollar remember and other characters are in different places..

Different software (US based rather than UK based).

Different mains connector (not a major problem I agree).

Most importantly - support. Sony almost certainly wont support a laptop in the UK that was bought in the US. If anything goes wrong you are stumped.

There is no import duty now - but there still is VAT.

There is also a charge for the royal mail to collect that VAT (you get carded and need to go to the sorting office to pay the VAT and their charge when you pick it up).

You get a keyboard with no pound or euro keys.

You are also relying on the royal mail - and it could be 17.5% VAT by the time it arrives.

    You get US aimed software.

You get a two pin 110v charger.

You get mega hassle if it is DOA (although if your friend tests it this lessens the risk).

More bother if it has a built in sim modem (which wont match).

Its from america - which although a lovely country - is full of americans!

Thanks for your reply. I understand the risks. I am used to both kinds - UK and US laptops. My personal laptop is US made and work laptop is UK made.

I understand I will have to pay VAT @ 15% (before 31 Dec and 17.5% after 31 Dec). How is the VAT calculated? I mean based on what price? Is it the price I declare? or is it the price on the invoice?

If I import through DHL / FedEx is there still a charge payable to Royal mail?
