Long story awful weekend YLOD on PS3. Lots of great advice from HUKDers re sony etc but luckily i have found a friend that is doing a deal on their PS3 with me as their son has moved to Xbox.
So i now have a PS3 with fault spare. i know i can sell this obviously stating fault on ebay for about £70. Great but i am really worried about the HDD. As someone who knows very little about computers there could be account info photos all sorts on there. So my idea is to buy a cheap HDD off ebay for about £10 and replace my HDD sell it with the new HDD in. I would still get a good profit from this. It is very easy to put in so that is not a worry.
If i did this would it mean there would be no information about me and my family on the PS3. Is all the info in the HDD. I havent a clue about ROM and RAM and all that just want to know whether my idea makes sense. if it doesnt i will not feel comfortable getting rid of the old one which of course would be a loss.

There will be no personal details, photos etc on the ps3 if you remove the hard drive.

Thankyou it makes me feel alot more comfortable about doing it this way. Given you rep.

You may need to download the ps3 software/firmware to a usb stick and boot from that to format and set up a new hard drive. There are many easy guides on the net. It's really easy.

You should be able to do a "restore to factory settings" or re-format the HDD from the options, i'm sure i've seen it somewhere, then delete your user (far left of the XMB press triangle on your name, it should give you the option of deleting)

Put the HDD from the 60GB machine into the new PS3.

Format the 60GB HDD there, and then put it back into the old PS3.
Job done.

There's no need to buy another HDD off Ebay

Edited to add:

I believe all your photos on the old 60GB HDD are lost now, as you can't put it in another PS3 without needing to format it.

I presumed they would be different sizes or something as i will be getting one of the new slim types. If you can put the HDD into a new PS3 couldnt you then take the information such as saved games from it and then put them onto an external HDD to then reload into your new HDD.
I have a feeling i am wanting miracles here:oops:

No the physical size of the hard drive is the same, it's only the capacity that is different.
They have a different "carrier", as the phats' drive is in the side, whilst the slim is accessed from the front.

I took the drive out of my 60GB machine, and exchanged it with a 320GB one.
I then got a slim PS3, and took it out of the phat, and put it in the slim.

When you put a HDD from one PS3 into another one, it needs to be formatted to work with the new machine. So, you have to back up all the files and folders on it, put the drive in the new machine, format it, and then copy the backed up folders back onto it.

If the PS3 is broken(as yours is) you are jiggered. As far as I am aware, you have lost all that is on it including photo's, music, game saves etc. All you can retrieve is your trophies and material downloaded from the PSN store.

Yes thanks thats what i was guessing. Its a valuable lesson to my 13 year old to start backing up his stuff every now and then. I just feel a bit sorry for him. Luckily all his photos and music are also stored on the computer so its only his game saves. Thanks.

if you can get a carriage for your HDD, you'll be able to save the information to a PC and if you can figure out which files are the save games you'll be able to transfer them. it may be simpler to just start the games again though, unless you know a bit about computers and can splash out on the carriage
