    Innocent smoothies

Hey was wondering if someone could shed some light on this.

Every tuesday when im at college i get through a full 1 litre innocent smoothy in about 2 hours. Have been having one a week for about a month now. Is it bad to drink it all at once?

Any such thing as having too much Vitamin C?

    their expensive as.....

Don't think that's bad for you. Maybe if you drank 2 or 3 liters of the stuff every single day. Litre once a week seems perfectly fine to me. They taste nice don't they? Bloody expensive though. I only get them when they're on special offer.

you excrete vitamin c at an incredibly fast rate, so don't worry nothing bad will come of it

You can definately take too much Vitamin C, Although you'd have to take about 2000 mg daily for it to cause a problem (bear in mind an average orange has 80 mg).
Excess Vitamin C can cause Headaches, Nausea, Diarrhoea and Polyuria (going to the toilet frequently).
I'm a final year medical student in case you're wondering.....

BTW just checked the innocent smoothies website and the Vitamin C in the big cartons varies from 10mg per 100ml to 43mg per 100 ml so you should be ok!

Before I was old enough to be served alcohol (at 14) in the village i lived, I used to drink 2 litres of orange juice to get a kick or 2 litres of Dr Pepper, until I noticed my teeth were taking a hammering.

Actually, smoothies or pure fruit juices only count as 1 of your 5 a day, no matter how much or how many different varieties you drink.

There is a debate on this subject at the moment in dietetic circles. The 'only 1 portion from fruit juice' refers to a squeezed juice where most of the pulp is removed from what you drink and you don't get their beneficial effects like the fibre, etc.

With a smoothie most of that fibre goes into the drink so that could be as good as eating the whole fruit as it's all in there. Whether there is some breakdown in the smoothie of some of the beneficial factors in terms of vitamins I don't really know, but I would say that at least a couple of the 5-portions could be from smoothies, just not the full 5 as some of it has to be veg to get a full range of beneficial factors.
