installing oem on new computer- advice please.

    Hi,
Buying a new computer but its got no operating system,. Always bought one before with it on.
Is it just a case of putting disc in and installing it ?
Thinking of windows xp media center- that way no clashes with older software and printers etc.
    Thanks

    bump please

You need to give longer than 11 minutes to bump up a thread! :?

I really think you should research about building a PC. Why not buy yourself a book? ]HERE
Reason I say this is because of all the questions you keep asking then bumping them every 5-10 mins. Theres no need. Try and keep it to ONE thread. We don't want MSE here ya know!

As for your question, the BIOS settings need to be set to boot from CD-Rom. Put in your CD then reboot the comp and it should go through the installation. HTH

    Me too :giggle:

    Oops......just did.

It would be easier to keep all into one thread, I often browse the whole of the misc forum (as i'm sure many others do), So it doesn't need to be bumped though.

How are you getting on with it. I'm just wondering why you chose Windows Media Center over XP ?

Installing an OS is as simple as putting the disc in and starting the computer. On the first reboot, and onwards, choose 'boot from the hard disk' if it asks. If you boot from the CD again, it'll just start the install all over.
If it is a new PC with no OS, I would hope that the OEM had the foresight to set the bios to boot from CD as primary boot device.
It's a simple procedure if you have just a little aptitude and can be bothered to read the prompt screens. Anyone can do it. Give it a go. The worst that can happen is that you have to start again.

Unless it has raid, then it can be an ass.

    Hi,
Havent got the computer just yet -will be here in a week or so.
I thought xp media for a change and wanted to use it to watch and record tv .
Didnt want vista -got an old printer and photo copier and old software -so didn't want all incompatibility issues.
Still got to buy the OS too.

You can record and watch TV on XP (I do it!).
