    Insurance Question

    Hey guys

Im getting ym first ever car this saturday its a rover mini sprite red with white top - not these new bmw coopers - but see my dilemma is i havent driven since i passed my test 2 months ago - im insured to drive the mini from the 12th as i just took out the policy

But id prefer my dad to drive it home as its from kent and we live in sutton so its quite far to drive for ym first time - no my query is can my dad drive my car even if he isnt a named driver on the policy or can he drive it on his own insurance if i allow him to drive my car ?

im fully comp so is he- but im the only named driver on the policy - thats what im not sure about as im sure for him to drive he needs to be added to the additional driver thingy

if he is fully comp on his car, then he is insured 3rd party on the mini

I wanna see a pic of your car!!

Probably alright, why don't you just ring up the insurance company though and find out for peace of mind.
Both my dad and myself are fully comp and we swap cars sometimes.

    be careful
a LOT of companies have removed the driving other cars option
tell him to check his policy, if he's covered it will say so on his policy, if it doesnt then he wont be able to.

BUT you can buy temp insurance for 1 day or a couple of days if you want

    see
    dayinsure.com/

Also although this wont affect you, driving other cars is nearly always limited to people over 25, anyone under that age wont be covered

Awww she's a cutie! Is that your actual one? Both my mum & sister have minis, fab wee cars

I do agree with Carley though about driving it yourself... and how are you going to get there to pick it up?

Just make sure you dont crash it driving home - you know what the one way system in Sutton is like :-)

dan you really should be confident enough to drive yourself, otherwise not much point in buying the car

you might find by naming your dafd on the insurance it will actually lower the cost of your policy sometimes quite considerably!! mine went down by 80 quid

if your dad is the policy holder fully comp insurance on at least one car then that should cover him to drive any other car with the owners permission being covered by third party. if not all insurance companies offer insurance for a couple of days which is usually quite cheap!

not if he is a named driver not the insured driver the policy is in the name of!

if its yer own insurance its your choice who else u have named to drive your car nawt illegal about it.

But it does make a difference in the price still especially for young/new drivers

plus like you said your dad is gonna be driving your car so its not even false information

theres a big difference in policy holder and named drivers i agree if you put the policy in his name it would be illegal but in your own name with others named on it is perfectly legal and common!

For the first year you would be better having your dad as a named driver, that way if you do have any problems he can drive the car for you. I have my dad as named driver on my policy although he has only used the car once in the last five years. Likewise I am named on his policy (although I drive his car several times a year). As a new driver having your dad named should bring the price down, its got to be worth a phone call to find out, you will lose nothing. Good luck:)

    Ah, ok. My bad

You sound like such a nice guy in real life Dan, completely different to how you often sound on here ;-)

Phone up your insurance company and enquire about having your dad as a named driver. Its not fronting, i have both my parents as named drivers, this allows us to be more flexible if i drive them somewhere and decide i want a drink or if their cars break down. it also saved me £100

Thats a common misconception but totally wrong these days as many drivers find out to their cost.

    CHeck with your insurance company.
