I had a 1.6 peugeot 106 XS and it recently went bang so i bought a 2001 1.4 citreon saxo furio. Thought it would be a doddle changing the car on insurance as its in a lower insurance group and smaller engine. However they're saying it drags my premium up and they want £400?! Is this normal? Seems like a massive con.

Well I don't really want to pay cancellation fees etc, would rather see the policy out.

whatsThePoint

try a different company

that's what I'm doing atm, I've only been with mine a year.. and they want like a hundred more this year..ayyyy!? No way.

Some insurance companies are putting prices up so even if you had same car at renewal it may have gone up.

Also is your new car newer or more valuable then the old car? As that would also put premium up

Get a quote from another company, then go back to your existing company & tell them that you have a lower quote & ask them to match it.

too little info

length of insurance remaining?

original premium?

£400 sounds ridiculous

My premium on a multi car insurance last year was £391. Twelve months later following a claim free year etc my renewal quote came in this morning at £714.34:(

Got an online quote with the same company for around £420 which after ringing them up they have honoured. I dread to think the number of people who just get their renewal quotes and accept them because they can't be bothered to haggle or dispute!

Anyway to cut a long story short, insurance companies can be robbing bar stewards if you let them get away with it.

Insurance remaining till April, payments stop in January.
Original premium 1600

Seems like theres nothing i can do, even if i kick up a fuss? Can't afford to pay the money up front on top of the 150 coming out a month, im a student man! lol

Was the new car more expensive/ newer?

I got rid of my car in Feb, bought a new one worth 5 times as much and 8 years newer - More Than didnt charge me a penny - still had 6 months remaining on the policy!

Yeah its newer, old one was an R reg and this has a 51 plate. But i set the value of the car exactly the same.

a lot of people kit these cars out and are popular amongst the youth

yes there is. Get a quote for a year / remaining policy term from gocompare.com etc and check your policy for their refund allocation rates (dont believe what they quote on the phone).

then do the math.

moral of the story is:-

only a fool would accept a renewal quote without shopping around

mine was 40% cheaper than the renewal quote this year with the same company. Bugs me how they get away with it tbh. Mind you, I suppose its the idiots paying the renewal without question that keeps ours lower lol

Phone them up again, ask for a quote, but give them your neighbours address and change your name slightly, keep all the other details the same (i.e. age, model of car etc.). See what they quote you at then...

Check their Quotes online and they will drop it to this.
Always cheaper, also check the other companies as it takes them 2 minutes to check what you can get from other companies so if you call with a quote from say Admiral, they will match it.

I never bother with the compare sites anymore as they are always at least £200 out.
When its renewal time, I just ask on the model specific forum who is doing good deals, always works a treat for mine and the wifes Zed.
