Insuring brand new phone from eBay without receipt

I bought a brand new unopened phone from ebay in October and I want to guy gadget insurance for it

Every insurer I've looked at mention something along the lines of:

We can only insure mobile phones that are purchased new from an auction site and have the original proof of purchase receipt showing the IMEI/serial number and make and model of your mobile phone.

However I do not have a receipt from the seller and when I asked for it this was their reply:

"You can use your Paypal account as proof of purchase for insurance purposes. Any Home or Contents insurance you have should cover the phone.

I did not receive an invoice for the upgrade as I pay monthly for the contract."

Has anyone else tried insuring an upgrade phone purchase?
