    Internet Connection Help

Currently have a desktop PC downstairs connected to router from SKY. Also have a laptop which I can connect via the router from SKY.

Problem is have a belkin network adaptor connected to sons desktop via usb port upstairs however it wont connect anymore.

I have an old AOL router when we was with AOL, is it possible to connect the upstairs desktop using the AOL router to gain access from the SKY router, or would it be better to buy a new network adaptor or even install a network card in the desktop PC upstairs.

If I need a network adaptor or network PCI card can anyone recommend one

    Thanks

Did anything change between when the Belkin adapter worked & when it stopped working?

Is the IP address of your son's computer in the same format as the laptop?

Have you tried using system restore? That tends to undo any system changes which may have caused your problem

when it worked it was an intermittent connection, think it stopped a few weeks before we changed over to the Sky router and now doesnt work at all, got rid of AOL due to lots of disconnections

Our Belkin has a habit of disconnecting itself every now and then and just needs to be told to reconnect and then works perfectly again - not a clue why it does it but could this be what yours is doing ?

you need to configure the belkin adaptor with the correct encription code of the new Sky router, as it sounds like its still configured for the AOL one

...and make sure the firmware for the Belkin adapter is up-to-date.

It may be possible to use the AOL router as a simple switch, it depends on which settings are available.

    Try asking here;

Ive unisntalled the software and reinstalled with the latest software from the Belkin site

Could be because the desktop is aver 5 years old and has USB1 because it says it could be faster with USB2.

But still says No internet or weak connection.

Could I just install a USB2 PCI card or maybe a wirelss card and not bother with the Belkin adaptor

this looks like the USB adaptor I have, the desktop downstair which is directly connected to the router is VIsta, laptop is XP home and desktop upstairs which is having problems is XP Home

    amazon.co.uk/Bel…8-3

And a list of wireless PCI network cards which I could maybe use

    amazon.co.uk/s/r…y=0

Somebody mentioned I maybe able to use the AOL router directly in the desktop upstairs, how would I use it, do I just connect it via the USB1 on desktop and would it then show list of available networks or would i have to install the aol software CD which came with it again???????????

It hasnt got an IP Address yet because its not connected

They type of adaptor in my experience does not make a difference, in fact by the sound of it you have not had a problem before. I have read your post again and you say that you think the problem started before you took on the Sky connection, so the problem could be either a software thing ie Firewall or new Windows update. Or it could be that your adaptor is now faulty.

One think I would try is take the Belkin adaptor with the laptop or pc closer to your Sky base station as this new one may be a bit weaker that the AOL one. Also if you still have your AOL one, you could use that by doing a factory reset on it, which if it the regular netgear one, is simply switch it off and then hold the rest button (small thing that you will need a paperclip to poke) then switch back on still pressing the reset for at least 10 seconds. This get the ADSL router back to factory settings. You can then "simply" use your new Skye details to log on

One little trick would be to use the USB wifi adaptor stuck in a USB extension cable if you have one, just so that it get a "bit of fresh air" instead of being cooped up behind the back of the desktop

Note the PCI Wifi adaptor as below looks ok. This will give you a stroger signal that the usb ones anyway as they have a specific ariel.

Hope my suggestions help you out, i would love to help more

Thanks Ill try your suggestions with the AOL router.

As for the USB extension, its already on a lead it looks exactly like the one on the belkin site below but dont think its the G+ version. Ive also tried it connected via a usb HUB i got from poundland :-D
