put a router in his room?

    and connect the routers?

Disclaimer: not sure this works mind.

Ethernet Powerline Adapters are the way. I use a few of them which allows the lan connection over the mains line.

cable from router to powerline adapter which plugs in to the mains. Another mains powerline adapter by the computer. so basically the adapters take the internet connection through the power line using the adaptoers.

Better known as homeplugs, they work perfectly.

I live in a 3 storey house with concrete floors, my router is in the basement and I can use a laptop on the top floor

Amazingly the signal is boosted through the wiring in your home.

I went for the devolo Homeplugs (Wireless)

homeplugs - thats it! I knew they had a generic name!!

Sorry if this is a stupid question. If you use the homeplugs does your laptop for instance have to actually be plugged into it or does it act wirelessly from the plug if that makes sense.

Yes it will have to be plugged in. The other alternative is to get another router to connect to the original router and use it as an access point.

The homeplugs are really good, but i bought this aerial before the homeplugs were around and it works really well to improve signal.

You can buy wireless homeplugs. I am using devolo Homeplugs, they are both wireless and the option to plug them in directly at the bottom(Socket in the bottom), so both. In other words you can sit on your laptop 3x floors away from the router without wires.

The wired versions are cheaper, and are better suited for the likes of your gaming machine or tower pc etc as the wires will be out of view. Wireless I think is the only way to go if you are a laptop user.

The wireless ones then basically boost your wi-fi signal through the house. You need the kit, so one part plugs into your router and the wirless point plugs into any power socket in your house

    Edit :

Starter kit wireless (Of course shop around)

Say at a later date you want to boost signal to another location, then only one of these :

    pcworld.co.uk/gbu…tml (Ignore price)

Or if you want wired (For your PS3 for example out of view)

    pcworld.co.uk/gbu…tml

Shop around of course, Amazon may well be cheaper

Thanks sparkyIreland this will be really helpful.
