Internet.... Cost + flat mates!

Yet another rant about my proposed flat mates! So, I got a text message tonight telling me that I have to pay £10 per month for our internet as it's £30 a month

"hey, just to let you know we have to get internet with virgin media as we don't have a bt phone line, but it's the fastest we can get so it'll be really good, they are installing it on tuesday it's £10 per month each, and it'll come out of the joint account if you want internet , let me know if you want it!"

I personally think that £30 is incredibly expensive and we do not need the fastest internet!! I just really want some advise on what to do with this, also... I don't know if they expect me to start paying know when i'm not living there let alone using the internet!
along with this they are messing me around with someone pulling out (yet again!) to which nobody informed me of this, I had to be informed by our estate agent being told by someone that enquired about it after seeing an advert online!! (gumtree) I really don't know what to do! Help please!

I thought your flatmate ASKED if you want it - simply say no. It might be helpful if you can provide an alternative costing to your flatmates. Just give it a little thought on who's name will be on the account - you might not want yours to be on it if your flatmates decide to move on and your tied in to a long contract.

Surely they can't expect you to pay towards he internet, you don't even live there yet! Can't you find someplace else with flatmates that treat you with respect rather than try to rip you off? :x

They sound silly, I men they believe the hype about it being fastest when its throttled down to speeds most of the day and you can get 24 meg BE for £18 a month if they had a BT line.

DONT pay anything till you move in a then you are paying their share

Hardly a rip off - they were polite enough to ASK beforehand.

They may ask but they may not give a choice.

I.e may pester the person or drop hints

They could just go ahead then say the OP owes them money.

churchy,

I think you've hit the nail on the head - perhaps the OP feels as if they are having second thoughts moving, if so the text has just increased those worries, as the text seems non threatening at all. ;-)

They have asked, I do need it, I'm just not appreciating the way they expect me to pay the £10 for the "best speed" which in other words is expensive! We don't need fast internet!
I'm definitely not having my name on any documentation to do with them currently!
our uni has free wireless access in one of the rooms in the library so if i wanted i could use that!

that's what they seem to think i'll be doing i think! I definitely wont be as I can stay roun my bf's while i'm back visiting uni before october! I'm concerned that i will loose my incredibly expensive deposit along with the £200ish they owe me already! :x

They are being incredibly silly! They hadn't even told me one had backed out!!! To make it worse I should imagine the flat below will steal our access too, unless it has a password, which i doubt they'll do!
I'll probably say i can't afford to pay for it while i'm not there, along with the fact they already owe me money!

um, the rip off is the fact we don't need "the best speed" we're only students! Not exactly hack0rz. :whistling: or internet geeks etc... 2 of us got to know each other through our fashion course haha!

Well considering they are saying its getting installed on Tuesday it means they have gone ahead anyway.

Is that for interent only? If so its expensive, im sure you can get internet and TV for that price, or even internet tv and phone

uhuh, many other places! think i'll have to speak to my estate agents / flat mates about everything in more detail... but... when i phone the one I know well she doesn't answer her phone! Strange this is... I've phoned her before as I couldn't get in to the flat (no keys!) she didn't answer her phone, but when i got in there she had a phone call and answered it! Gave me the impression she was ignoring my calls!

Sound like great friends! I'd ring the estate agent and see what else they got to offer. Or maybe you're being paranoid (I don't mean it in a nasty sense). Maybe there are perfectly logical reasons for the phone calls etc.

Well have a chat to them, face to face, get your differences and anxieties sorted out before you finally commit yourself. I'm sure it'll all work out fine for you.

The problem is they will assume yor happy with whatever they do unless you tell them otherwise.

I lived with 5 other people at Uni for 2 years in a house and it is hard because people just assume everyone else will be happy with whatever decision is made when in reality everyone has different priorities

people are rarely happy now a days! I'm prepared to compromise on everything! (even having the smallest room instead of the room on my own floor! to help everyone out!)
My priorities are money and knowing i'll be able to financially survive, but little miss "daddy will pay everything" doesn't grasp the concept of being wise with money! :x

My flatmates a few months ago were a pain, one left owing the landlord about 4 months rent, owing another tenant £300 from making international phone calls, always begged for money saying he was skint, he was from Zimbabwe and kept saying white people cant be poor, and hes poor as shes from Zimbabwe so we had to share everything with him and if he asked to borrow something we should.

Funnily with him though when he left what he doesnt realise is the landlord is a solicitor in the housing field and the landlord has tracked him down and found out he owns his own house and a good car and is married!

Landlord is now in process of bankrupting the guy.

By chance is your landlord the same as mine?! She's something like a solicitor! :-D i hate attitudes like "white people are rich" we're not, we've just got a stronger economy! ridiculous!

Good luck getting your money back btw!

Leading a double life......the bounder (not allowed to swear on here!). I'd hate to share a place, sounds like more trouble than fun. :-(

Nah mine is a guy and works in Manchester and owns the houses he rents out.

I have had bad experiences with agencys as the one I was at last year never fixed the tiles on roog so the house was covered in damp and water and I kept getting colds all the time and furniture was falling apart and they came round one day and grabbed me and tried to evict me on spot and saying what a bad person I was as I wasnt paying rent(I was and was in credit) but they claimed I was £2000 in debt(which is impossible as the rent was £80 a week and only was there 5 months)

Had a laugh though as I went to a solicior and they sent him a letter and he said he wouldnt bother me any more.

Well he used to say he had family in Kent and at first went to see them 2-3 times a month for a few days at a time then since christmas stopped going down suddenly

He used to flirt with EVERY woman that came in, he asked if my mum was single(and he knew she was 54) he asked if my flatmates mum was single and shes 64(hes 34 btw) used to ask every girl who came to the house to come up to his room for a "chat".used to squeeze past them, comment on their figures e tc.

The female flatmate stopped bringing her friends round after that.

Bear in mind this was in North West England, in Cheshire and he went to Kent a huge distance.

Ohhh a granny grabber! (not your mum, your flatmates mum!)

Don't forgot you are generally tied to a 12 month contract with internet and by the sounds of it you will only be living there 1 year. So someone will have to pay for 12 months regardless, and anyone who wants the internet should be prepared to pay for it over the whole contract period. If you think the highest speed is unneccessary discuss this with your housemates - although I think £20pm is the cheapest Virgin do...
