    can open
    worms everywhere!!!!

    SuperEd

    Avast!

    Microsoft Security Essentials.

I don't use a Firewall other than the one already built into XP and Win7.

    Other software:

    CCleaner
    Malwarebytes.

use avast, or put ubuntu on it as a dual boot. auto set to boot ubuntu and forget about windows until those odd times you may need it and then boot into windows.

Since when has AVG not been free? The free version works fine (Well used to, are they charging now???)

Ok as mentioned Malwarebytes should be installed, I love that program. I am a free tech guy for many family/friends, have been using AVG free along with malwarebytes and hijack this, spybot search & destroy, adaware, ccleaner among others for years, all free and all good. I still like AVG although many now don't, to be fair though I have been using free trials up on recent machines so haven't used it in a while.

Auslogics for free and best disk defrag.

How do you lose a computer due to a virus?

As mentioned, Avast is good although i didnt like the interface when i had it but that was a few years ago now. I have microsoft essentials (free just use google) and also as mentioned malwarebytes (also free), had a virus few weeks back which stopped the antivirus but malwarebytes cleaned it up so would highly recommend that!

LOL - thats what I thought until I put Kaspersky on my PC and it found 3 trojans AVG had happily ignored for years

The number of people with viruses in MISC with AVG installed is a big clue as to how vulnerable it is now.

    Blimey! talk about overkill.

remember tho, a free antivirus is just that, an antivirus. have yourself a few other progs like malwarebytes and spybot and the like to zap anything else that comes in. plus be careful which browser you use, and where online you put your card details.
its not just about protecting your computer anymore, its about protecting yourself too.
if you dont mind paying for a full security suite that takes care of everything rather than running 3-6 progs all at once, then look at Kaspersky, Trend Micro and the dreaded (by some who cant accept change) Norton too.
