Introducing PepperBonus - a new way we’re helping you save more money

Posted 8th Nov
Hi folks,

We wanted to give you an early heads up of a new type of deal you’ll be seeing over the coming weeks - something we’re been working hard on, called PepperBonus.

Put simply, we will be working with retailers that we already know you love, to boost how good deals are by giving an extra bonus on top of market-leading deals - such as Amazon vouchers, for instance. We’re hoping for a variety of different types of products and retailers to take part.

These deals will be exclusive to hotukdeals, either the offer in its entirety, or by paying out bigger bonuses than anywhere else i.e. if there is a promotion at PepperBonus, it won’t be available better anywhere. We really believe this will create extra value for all the hotukdeals members who want to take advantage.

To qualify for the vouchers, you will need to go through a new PepperBonus website. Then just click through the referral link, buy the product, stick to the offer terms and conditions (these will vary depending on what it is) - and we’ll track the purchase and then fulfil the voucher.

For anyone who has used a cashback site before, like Quidco, it’ll work a bit like that. We are very confident in our ability to process these transactions and make sure that if you have done what you need to, you’ll get the voucher. So if you make a genuine purchase and follow the rules, but for some reason the system doesn’t log it, contact us through the PepperBonus site and we will do everything we can to fix any problem.

PepperBonus has been added to a few of the deals on our the Pepper site in Germany - mydealz - already. Here are some examples to give you an idea how it will work: mydealz.de/gru…nus

---

Update 11 Nov: Here is the first Pepper Bonus deal:

£90 Amazon voucher on EE £24/month Sim Only. Unlimited minutes & texts, 50GB data (12 month £288/£198 effective with reward) via PepperBonus

---

We believe this will work really well for our UK members too - it is worth saying though that this is currently a beta. We are confident the vouchers element will work fully (and will chase down any issues for you), but the support team will be around to help if any other issues pop up.

We’d really love everyone’s feedback and constructive criticisms of this idea and how it works. Once the deals launch, it would be great to keep the comments about the individual offers in their own comment threads (so that we don’t miss any issues) and general discussion of the program in here.

What is Pepper?

Pepper is the world’s largest deal sharing community, and hotukdeals was one of the founding members. We now run shopping communities around the globe, including the market leading sites in Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, Austria, Mexico, Brazil, Russia, and India.

One of the big advantages of being part of the Pepper network is more ideas, resources and people at our disposal - things like PepperBonus are hopefully a good example of that. You can read more about it here: Pepper: what is it?

Does Pepper make money from PepperBonus?

Yes. Like with other offers on the site, commission fees from retailers cover our running costs, But most importantly, whether a deal earns commission or not does not influence the listings or their position on our site - in the case of PepperBonus, we won’t be including it unless it beats other similar offers available

Sorry not yet, as we haven't had a PepperBonus deal in the UK - we are hoping to very shortly though.

One thing you could try, when I use Chrome it offers to translate foreign pages for me (a pop up in top right corner) when I visit that page - that's how I read it
And so it begins.

So you mean just show them as adverts? Which they currently don't do. Which is against advertising rules. ASA will catch up with them soon enough..

Better deals are always available, you just have to know where and how to get them

Yep we will know which deals are gonna be hot every day...

Deals get hot when users vote for them. If we organise PepperBonus deals people don't like, they'll go cold and we'll have to do better

We'll do the same checks we do when posting any deal - see if we can find it better anywhere else, and if we can, we won't post it.

If something is launched that beats a PepperBonus deal, we would do what we do with all deals - add an update to the OP explaining there is now a better deal.

Ah, i just noticed your wording includes "exclusive to pepper"... so that's your get out.. You're not claiming to be better than anyone else, just "exclusive".

Edit: But wait, you later claim " in the case of PepperBonus, we won’t be including it unless it beats other similar offers available"

So what will the bonus deals be based around, financial services etc? As that's all it seems to be in the links to mydealz?

Sorry to wade in with the negative comments you are getting here @Planty720 (that, to be fair, we all could have predicted), but updating the Opening Post (thread description) with details of "a better deal" rarely happens. Typically, threads are quickly 'expired' & not touched again. In fact, it is just as rare to see a (contracted/paid) member of the site's staff commenting in "Deal" threads after submission.

Are you suggesting this is supposed to happen (from now)?

Prior to the "gopep" design of the site (that I appreciate was before you, or this account you are using, became a member of the site) when "Deals" were marked as 'expired', we used to see a list of selected links to other "Deals" based on similar 'tag' keywords beneath the Opening Post (but the keyword matching was far from ideal &, in many cases, proved useless).

All deals are reviewed by the team when they're posted to check that they are in line with our publication rules. One of the main things they're looking out for is that the deal is market leading (and like for like unless there is an additional benefit like an extended warranty justifying a slightly higher price). That check is done when the deal is shared. If within 15/30 minutes or so (after reviewing the deal) it is no longer market leading (that rarely happens) we'll simply remove the thread if we're made aware.

Getting back to the question...if it later transpires that the deal is not market leading and it has been around for a while then we need to consider what we should do with it. At that point (when we're aware) we'll stop any additional exposure for the thread (highlights/newsletter/whatsapp etc) and where possible we'll add into the post that it can be found cheaper elsewhere. Here is an example of when that happened - hotukdeals.com/dea…443 We linked to Vouchercodes and put a link in the thread update.

We lowered our thread auto-expire recently and we also put a warning on threads 2 weeks old that the price might be incorrect so asking members to please double check the price is the same when clicking through.

I wish it was possible for us to recheck every single thread on site to check whether it is still market leading but that just isn't possible. When we provide additional exposure (highlights etc) we do another check to make sure that the item is still available and it is still the best price.

If you have any suggestions on how we can improve that process we'd be happy to hear it.

Once we've checked, and saying it is still at that price, how do we remove the warning bit?

The only way it has been possible is expire, then unexpire? I edit, and it stays.

Whenever I "report" a "Deal" that has 'expired' the default "We took care of it" response just means the member of the team reviewing my "report" has checked & noted my findings as correct. The thread is then 'expired'.

Never have I seen more information added to indicate a "better Deal".

You may think that is what happens but not in my experience.

Would you like to join the dots between those with significant control of Maple Syrup Group Limited (that owns the majority share capital of Maple Syrup Media Limited), the information provided in the "Pepper: what is it?" thread, & the footer of the home page of Quidco.com?
