Apple iOS 11 release could save you being fined £1,000 by introducing a new mode called “Do Not Disturb While Driving”.

This function blocks all notifications from showing up when it detects you are driving.

The iOS software uses a Bluetooth connection or Wi-Fi doppler to determine when you are driving.

When this function kicks in, your iPhone screen will be blacked out until you stop driving.

What’s more, Message will automatically response to any texts you receive, informing friends and family that you are driving.

Certain contacts can be marked as important which means that their messages will not be blocked.

This mode can be triggered to automatically turn on as soon as you start driving.

But would it affect the use of satnav application?

Good point no idea.

Or just don't answer it when driving.

I suppose it's a good idea if it improves safety, you guys seen the Nissan solution? popularmechanics.com/car…ar/

Seems kinda pointless. If you are the type of person to use your phone when driving you will just leave the feature off.

My old Nokia had the same functional option. I suspect most phones still do. It involved the complicated process of pushing a button for a few moments, often with the benefit of not being disturbed for the rest of the day.

So, the new super duper innovative advance by Apple, after many years and squilions of $$$s in R&D, recreates what was once known as, the OFF button.

Hmm.

Nothing like it and you know it...

There's a difference between turning one's phone off and a filter which only allows certain urgent notifications through and switches on automatically when driving!

Quite sad how some people have to be negative about everything. If this feature saves just one life, its well worth it. And I applaud their innovation.

I assume the feature can be switched on/off.

Presumably they have not patented the idea so other manufacturers are free to adopt it without being sued?

Edit - I think we all know the answer. Apple blocking safety by patenting the technologies. Sorry but hate them..

Don't other phones already have this?

Always going to be the case with Apple and it's certainly a good thing if they're trying to make the roads safer however it's hard to see past this very valid comment:

I am not aware of any. Most phones have a do not disturb mode but this will stop everything including call which I believe will still be available for hands free use.
