iPhone 3GS on a 12-month contract - too good to be true?

I would like to get a 32GB iphone 3GS but would prefer not to get locked into an 18 or 24-month contract with o2.

So the route I was looking at is getting a 'Pay As You Go' iphone 3GS on o2 and taking up the current quidco offer of £100 cashback on the £19.98 12-month 800/1600 simplicity sim deal inc. unlimited web bolt-on.

    So £19.98 x 12 = £239.76 - £100 Quidco cashback = £139.76

    + iphone 32gb handset price: £538.30

    Total: £678.06 - (it equates to £56.51 p/m over 12-months)

If I were to get a iphone 3GS on a 18-month contract with o2, on a 1200/500 deal, costing £44.05 p/m method for 9-months then dropping to £34.26 p/m. The equivalent cost would be:

    (£44.05 x 9-months) £396.45 + (£34.26 x 3-months) £102.78 = £499.23

    + iphone 32gb handset price: £175.19

    Total: £674.42 (calculated over 12-month equivalent or £879.98 over 18-months) - (equates to £56.20 p/m over 12-months)

So the positives of this deal are:
    - Not tied-in to an 18-month contract.
    - Possibly saving £201.92 by not being tied-in to a contract for those extra 6 months.
    - You get more texts, a whopping 900 more p/m!
    - Move on to the newer iphone sooner (should one be released next summer).
    - The phone is mine to keep in the unlikely event that I should break the contract.

    ... and the negatives:
    - No free wifi at The Cloud & BT hotspots unless you choose it as a bolt-on.
    - No visual voicemail.
    - Need to pay £538.30 upfront for the iphone.
    - Dependent on Quidco tracking for the £100 cashback.
    - You get less minutes (400 less) for the first 9-months then you would on the 18-month contract but more then you would on the last 9-months (200 more).

In summary, you can get an iphone 3GS on a 12-month contract (for only £3.74 extra on the same time on a 18-month contract), and not tied in for another 6 months which means you could save over £200 and can move on to another carrier or sell the phone and get maybe £300+ back and upgrade to the next iphone. Yes I understand that the deal is dependent on Quidco paying out the £100 cashback but i've never had a problem with them before.
Also if you are credit worthy, you could apply for an interest free credit card and pay off the handset slowly.

Have I got all of this information correct or am I missing something in the small print?

well in theory , you get a bolt on , so you could get unlimited wifi with the sim only contract.

Yeah, I think you can swap your bolt-on on a monthly basis so can try either web or wifi throughout the 12-months.

nice, it's the original pay out that would put me off though, well worked out though, rep for sharing,

As long as you remember your o2 PAYG number.. you get a years free wifi.

I got a 16gb payg iphone 3gs, and use a vodafone sim only in it. I recorded my o2 payg number, and put it in on first connection. works great.

Also, dont think quidco pays out on iphone deals - payg or contract.

Quidco will payout the £100 as you are taking the simplicity sim-only deal.

Could you explain in more detail how you got free wifi although you aren't using the sim that comes with the PAYG iphone?

    Quidco sounds good!

    Theres nothing to explain.

When you connect an iphone to a cloud or bt openzone wifi spot, you get a o2 branded login asking for your number (saying it only needs this once) - put in the o2 payg phone number you were given, and it works - regardless of sim. There is no access to the sim from wifi as far as I know, so they can't access that info anyway?

Its not theft anyway - its included for 12 months with a payg iphone.... so you should be able to use whatever sim you like.

I believe once you have typed it in, your mac address is associated with it.

Not sure what happens if you change your iphone though etc...

Personally wouldn't risk it, but up to you.

Does that mean I wouldn't need to top up monthly, or at all, the web & wifi sim that comes with the payg iphone to get the wifi free for 12 months?
It would be really handy to have the wifi access at work where the o2 reception is very patchy, to say the least, but I know we have a bt openzone hotspot signal there so could use that instead.

Sounds good one neg is that you can't phone up retentions with pay as you go, everything else sounds good

Or could you with simplicity ??

If you are getting the wifi free too, using vibeone's method, this deal is even better!

As far as I know, its just 12 months free wifi and free web. However, as I haven't had my iphone a month yet, I can't be sure.

The marketting literature says you get it for 12 months, then after 12 months you have to pay £10 a month for unlimited web and wifi. So that to me means you've effectively 'purchased' the 12 month bundle and its included in the price of the phone. I don't see they can demand you top up (I've got about 22p credit left, so we'll see).

Like I said I just added my o2 payg number to contacts, so I always have it with me.

Thanks, i'm guessing that to use the free web, unlike the wifi, you would have to keep putting the payg iphone sim back in to the phone, which sounds like hassle so I would just choose it as a bolt-on with the simplicity sim.

Yes agreed. You'd definately need the sim in to use the 3g stuff... but the wifi is not gsm related.

I can confirm you will only be able to use the free wifi on the orginal iphone it was originally registered on.

with simplicity o2, the web bolt on is actually 500mb allowance a month, whereas the iphone pay as you go or contract is unlimited. Not sure what happens if you go over the 500mb, although your probably not likely unless you use the iphone constantly on youtube and downloading lots of apps

I assume there is an override for the reason I mentioned - replacement handset etc.

I had to replace mine - but hadn't activated wifi so wasnt a prob.

Yeah, I presume there must be.

On my old 2G that I got off ebay I used my mates wifi as he had a contract iphone and didn't use wifi but we've have since got new ones so not sure what the procedure is.
