    IPhone 3GS - water damage - help needed !!

    Hi

I gave my phone a bit of a shower - it was never submerged in water - but got a good spraying of water before i realised.

At the time i wiped the pone and thought it was okay - however by the evening - it was not switching on - comes on briefly - shows the apple sign - then disappears again and becomes a black screen again !!

Water damage not covered by Apple - out of warranty anyway -

Can anybody help revive my phone - can't live without it !!

    Would appreciate any suggestions !!

Try putting it in a container of dry rice so that it draws all the fluid out of it.

yes, we've had this problem before. put some rice in an airtight container and submerge iphone placing it right in. replace container lid to seal. DO NOT attempt to open container for atleast 3 days. open after a few days, and say a prayer before switing it on, lol.

    hopefully, should be ok.

just remember, don't open or attempt to revive iphone too soon

Yes, if you've tried to turn it on with water inside then this has probably caused no end of damage due to short circuiting.

You should've left it off and tried the rice trick then all might have been well.

    dreamdazzler that sucks man

the dry rice thing sounds so simple, and almost unbelievable..but I've heard it so many times it must work

If it is screwed then take it to an Apple store and they will replace it for £150. Not ideal but cheaper than buying a new one from scratch.

    X)i did this too

I did the rice. Turned it off put a load of rice in a zip seal plastic bag and the phone in the middle. I left it for two days. It was hard times It wouldn't turn on so iput it in the oven really low within a tray of rice. Charged it up for about 3 hours and it worked
If you have any if those little silicone packets you get in shoes or leather products they are supposed to be good for drawing out the moisture, just throw it in with the rice

Dropped my iPhone into a bath full of water, couldn't switch it off because there was water in the on/off switch, just dried it with a hair drier, and all was well. Still working, I'm sure you will be okay.

Have the moisture indicators changed colour?

I dropped mine in a rockpool, it barely even got wet, the indicators didn't change colour...........it still died. Tried the rice idea, left it for days, still no joy, it turned on etc, it just wouldn't charge. Thankfully I had insurance. Rice obviously works for some people, others its the hairdryer, for me sadly the phone was unfixable..........so I thought, they just changed the charging port and its fine.

Maybe its worth taking to a phone repair shop to see if thats all it needs if the rice idea doesn't help.

Look in the charging port, thats where they looked for mine, I think they go red when they get wet, I cant see them in the light just now in my 4 but that might just be my eyes, get a wee torch and have a squint. I think there are more indicators but not being an iPhone buff I couldn't tell you, all I know is the boy looked in to the charging bit for mine.

The salt in the sea water caused your phone to die, all you did was to extract the moisture and left the salt in your phone

its in the headphone jack mate, look down it and can see a white bit of paper thing it goes red if water damaged. however mines gone red even tho its not really been wet just answered a phone call out side and a spec of rain must have landed in it. a cheat way to maybe fool apple would be to tear a very small peice of paper and place it over the top of the red paper, cheeky, morally wrong etc etc etc but when it comes to apple they deserve it for over priced gizmos. lol.

got any update for us op? fingers crossed...

Lucky!! Next lesson, get insurance!! Saying that though, Some of the insurance companys can give some real scruffy replacements. Try to add it to your home insurance, its a lot of moneys worth to not be insured.

So if it has red parts on it the apple shop would have refused ?
Did the shop check for any water signs ?

When you take an iPhone back to an Apple store, they always check inside the headphone port, and on the bottom where the dock connector is. There are 2 pieces of water activated material in those places, which turn pink/red when water comes in contact with them.

Apple were very strict with the fact that if these were pink, the phone would not be replaced under warranty, but recently they have had to be a bit more lenient because just if the water comes in contact with these pieces, does not mean the water has penetrated the phone. So they have to do further investigating.

The OP stated in the end that it was in warranty I think a few posts up.

okay - as said before all the water indicators were white - no trace of red .. my hubby even opened up the phone to check .. all indicators were white .. i can only presume because the water mainly fell on the screen of the phone ..as it was laying face up when i gave it a shower by accident

With regards to warranty - Apple gave me a replacement phone back in January whilst my original phone was still in warranty - officially the new replacement handset came with a 3 month warranty for the same problem only.

However i had a very helpful lady serve me at the Apple store who was not too bothered - it was obviously not water damage as far as they were concerned - so she had no reservations about giving me a new one ..

in summary - lots of help from everyone on UKHD ,, my helpful hubby .. and very cheerful young lady at the Apple Store !!

i opened the phone all indicators were white .no sign of water inside the phone ... i have a feeling a small amount of water seamed through the sides of the screen as it was a replacement phone in the first place i have a hunch that the screen was not factory sealed ... hence there were no water indicators placed there for water penetration

i used to have insurance on it - however i find a lot of companies terms and conditions so vigorous - you might as well not have insurance ... used to pay vodafone £18per month to insure my phone ... when i tried to claim for loss of my phone in the summer .. they drove me mad !! had to take it as far as the CEO's office to get a solution !!

Apple are quite good when it comes to customer service. Recently my brother took his iphone 3g to apple it was around 6 months out of warranty (home button not working) after a little bit of negotiation and banter, they replaced his phone for free with a three month warranty. Unfortunatly the replacement they gave him wasnt very good (wifi not working)....so hes had that one replaced under the three month warranty.
Morale of the story.... even if your warranty is out and your apple product develops a fault its well worth taking it into a store. I think replacement is at the discretion of the staff member serving you. Be polite but firm and they will give in.
