iphone heating & battery issue ?

My iphone 4s that's now 2 years old has started losing power very quickly & sometimes the iphone get's a little hot.
I've turned off most apps & even the gps & email, but still seems the battery wants to jump from say 63% to 12% in a split second :-/

Any suggestions & all updates have been done.

Battery would not make it heat up from what I understand. I've did the updates & a hard reset.

Of course battery can get hot, It's one of the first signs of battery failure. Energy escapes in form of heat.

I'll try another battery, but reading up on this in google I've read people installing new battery's & still have the issue.

Could possibly be a short or something on battery terminals somewhere, May be the port, 100% battery related in some form.

On some occasions apps have been known to cause similar issues but unlikely to the extent of such a jump in power, You could try resetting it, However that's probably risky with a faulty battery as it'll probably throw up errors.

Perhaps there's something in the dock port shorting it out?

Turn it off and take a toothpick or something smaller if that's too big and dig out all of the pocket lint that's gathered in there, followed by a good old "Nintendo blow" to clear anything you've missed.

In the meantime I suggest turning it off and removing the battery because if it's shorting it could potentially blow up causing unknown amounts of damage to the internals.

It's been doing this for about 3 weeks now.
I was seeing it as some sort of power surge & was thinking more the charger connection that could be faulty.
At around £5 for a battery then i guess it's worth buying & then moving on to the charger port if battery still fails.

Drop into an Apple Store and they should diagnose it for you at the very least. If you're lucky they might just do a straight swap for you.

I've read people saying this, but when do the staff decide it's ok to swap an iphone when it's out of warranty ?

Not sure, never really had a major issue with anything so I've not had to go in, but the in store CS always get's a good review. May as well give it a shot, you've got nothing to lose.

They can do a diagnostic for you - book an appointment at the Genius Bar.

They charge £55 for the battery replacement service if you don't fancy DIY.

its only 4 screws to change the battery, two at bottom, then the back slides off, two which hold the battery clip in, then pull battery out.

new batteries are about 10£ from ebay, use a reputable seller like CEX or similar, the cheaper 6-9£ ones will say new but will have more than 200 charges under their belt (can check on a jailbroken phone with battery app).
