I am looking into getting a iphone but just want to clear some small things up.

I have a o2 sim card with free internet, (the sim only deal that got very hot on here a few months ago) if I but that into a 2g or 3g iphone would it work? would I need to unlock it? and would the internet work with safari?

Yes, the reason I know this is because I asked the same question to O2. I have a 3G sim card with free internet that I got with my Nokia N95-8GB. I asked O2 if I could use this in an iPhone PAYG or contract iPhone, and they said yes.

Edit : If you put the 3G sim card into a 2G phone it just means that you wouldnt be able to use video calling and some dedicated 3G services. You will still be able to use the internet no problem whether it is 2G or 3G.

I think the iphone has more of an awe factor and touch screen gadgetry....the N95 is packed with so much more capability I think, like I can use my Skype subscription on it while I'm on the move or connect to a wifi network and use it. I can also use my tesco SIP internet phone on it, so if people dial my landline number, I can still take the call on my mobile while I'm out and about.

I use my N95-8GB for SatNav as well with TomTom on it, and the other obvious, 5MP camera carl whatever lens, video player, mp3 player yada yada yada.....thats why I stuck with my N95-8GB......just so many uses from it...and its more robust than the iphone

Bare in mind if you use push email that will use a load of data (if there's a fair usage policy you might go over).
If you're not using push, yup, no problem. . .

I'm slightly confused by this response, I'm not fannning the iphone but Skype can be used through Fring and it has wi-fi

If you do a little reading a jailbreak the iphone you can get SIP/VOIP and even get a patch to trick the iphone into allowing VOIP and fring over 3G which in turn allows itunes over 3G.

I know it's not out of the box functionality but everyone seems to flame the iphone without really knowing its capability.

It's a bit like the xbox, if you want the basic version it's available, if you want to add bells and whistles then you can. A jailbroken iphone also allows you to iron out all the little issues the iphone lacks natively. MMS is available to non-iphone contracts so if you just stick a sim in you can send / receive MMS.

I guess the only thing you can't change is the 2MP camera.

I just wanted to give the other side of the coin in case it helps

Seems to me that you're jumping over hurdles to put the iphone on the same podium as the N95-8G

I'm not knocking the iphone, but all the things you;ve mentioned are things that only iphone enthusiasts would really want to do, many people just want the functionlity to be there on the gadget so they can use. Its on the N95-8GB ready to be used but not on the iphone ready to be used like you said.

All I seen in your repsonse was a long winded version of what I said but to make it sound like the iphone shouldnt be written off for it. I wasnt trying to write it off, just that I preferred the N95-8GB to the iPhone. Just an opinion and many will disagree and differ. Its what suits the person using the gadget
