iphone replaced under insurance - questions....

Found 18th May 2011
Hi all

I just got my 32GB iphone 3GS replaced under insurance. However my contract is up next month and I'm thinking of selling without using it.

I wanted to check the warranty status as I thought it's value would be higher if still covered but when I entered it on the apple website it told me that the phone must be activated first. Is there any harm (with regards to resale value and 'used' status) if I do this?

Also, what would people regard as the going rate for these?

Any (helpful!) comments appreciated!

Your warranty will be from the date of when you got your original phone.

I would have thought it would sell for more if you sell as new.

As long as you keep the screen/back protector on it when you recieve it then it should'nt effect resale value, once you have checked its status just blank it again so it will be as new for the new owner.

It's not white is it? after one for the mrs

not sure really, that's what I'm trying to work out!

i pretty sure your warranty under Apple will restart as its a new device.

You'll get more for a sealed box.

How about £225

What network is it locked to at present

True but I assumed as it's a replacement it will be a refurb and then not in a sealed box, so checking the warranty wont affect it's resale value. Also if it's replaced by Apple its warranty will be till the end of your original warranty or 3 months, whichever is longer. If it was replaced by your network (and is still a refurb not a new sealed box) then your warranty will be with them and not apple.

I'll just have to plug it in and find out i guess!

it's not in a sealed box and was replaced by carphonewarehouse insurance so shouldn't be network locked.

Looks like I'd get £231 cash (or £288 exch) from CEX. eBay varies massively. Some new sold for £350ish but I guess those are brand new sealed boxes.

I'll let you know who's right about the warranty once I get to it!

Not quite sure where this puts the price yet tho

after checking completed listings on ebay i think i'm going to have to list it there just because there's a better chance of getting a good price.

unless someone wants to offer me £300 right now obviously!

thanks everyone for the help & advice

Thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind. I'm sort of leaning towards offering it as trade for a macbook first as that's what I want to get with the cash.
Don't suppose you're selling one?
