Iphone wifi and data charges when on holiday

I've just returned from holiday and used my iphone for wifi networks, i came home to a data bill that i've queried, apparently the iphone automatically switches the data roaming on if the wifi drops, i've thought i've been on wifi but the phones switched itself over to roaming and accrued £27 of data charges!!

The only way to alleviate this is to keep the data roaming off and switch airplane mode on when using wifi!
If you incur any such charges, phone o2 and speak to the iphone faults department, they will help you out by refunding you after they look into your account... seems to be a common unknown fault!!

    Hope this helps someone else!

Cheers - was wondering about this. About to go on holiday soon, would like to use my phone by the pool.

Why not just goto Settings - General - Network & turn Data Roaming to "Off"

This wont happen then (no need for Airplane mode). Used my iPhone abroad with WiFi countless times & never had any data charges

i have a 3gs and have incurred charges, o2 have said only iphones have this fault but clearly you've been one of the lucky ones ChrisUK.

It also depends on the strength of the signal, if it's low and continually drops, then you'll incur charges.
I was in America for the first 4 days of my holiday and used wifi alot, there was no charges, i them went to mexico and used the wifi in starbucks, the signal strength wasnt' the best so this has been where my charges happened.

for the full 2 weeks, my data roaming was off but it automatically goes on if your on the internet (wifi) and it drops (although it doesnt change in your settings)

O2 said to back this option up with switching to airplane mode so that you can't access any cellular network.

I had my data roaming off for a full 2 weeks holiday yet still incurred charges, if this post can help someone to not get charged when they think they are safely using wifi then it's worth it, but i do get a bit tired of people stating obvious things (regarding settings), you have been lucky not to have got any charges as this is the basic function of the data roaming off setting, but it doesnt take it away from the fact that there is a fault with low signal wifi whilst abroad.

Sometimes just your personal experience and thanks for the heads up is all that's needed!

one thing that i wasnt sure about was using tom tom over there using gps... does that charge??
cos when I went away i turned data roaming off and tomtom wasnt able to find a signal...
    does tomtom require charges?

tomtom shouldnt' require charges as you've already downloaded the maps and the gps should be a facility of the iphone, but i myself, encountered charges when trying to use tomtom whilst in america in January.
I don't fully understand the app to be honest as i know it should incur any charges, i'm going back again in October and hope to try data roaming off, i can't understand why tomtom would want to attach to a network rather than a gps but possilby gsmforum (website) could help
