Is 3D really the next big thing or still a novelty ?

It seems every day some tv channel or magazine is telling me 3D is the next big thing but only one problem, i cant stand it.
We have all just about got a decent hd tele and have our home kitted out with sky hd or a hd console.
Ive seen avatar in 3D it didnt impress me at all not a vhs to dvd moment more a gamecube to wii moment yeh its a bit better but its costing more and barely adding anything.
Now sky have released their own channel but who will be watching as im not going to be.
So my question to my fellow bargain hunters is, will you be purposely buying a 3D tele in the next year or so or is it still just a fad with a less red and blue picture??

Well earlier this year I bought a Sony 40HX703, awesome TV, but because I'm stupid I talked myself into NEEDING the next best thing - 3D. So spend another £1300 on a Samsung 46C750 3D system. Had friends round, who basically either refused to try the glasses on or complained that it made them feel cross eyed. Finally after a week of testing on Sky3D channel test programs, I started to agree with everyone and sent it back.

Luckily I didn't put my Sony straight on eBay as I usually do to get some of the money. Basically, you need to have one for at least a week to see if you like it. Don't just jump in after a 2 minute sample view at Comet like I did. Don't buy it to impress anyone, as you'll find, like I did, people just laugh when you get the glasses out.

People laugh at the glasses?

Sad tbh.

Why would you want to wear glasses whilst your watching the tele and if you lie down or are in a certain position they will not work properly

I only got a HD television this year, so, no.

BBC are trialling super High definition. Tune in to "click" on the iplayer for more information.

3d looks like a stupid way to chill out in front of tv

I think Toshiba are bringing out a 3DTV that doesn't need any glasses so I wouldn't bother with any of these current TV's as they will all move to that system.

Isn't it all because some movie studios are using it as an anti piracy measure in cinemas (I suppose 3D doesn't record well on a handheld)?

NO.

no - I'm blind

Why would you buy a TV that required special glasses that cost a bundle and needed you to be sitting a specific way to get the benefit?

Also, is the technology standardised yet? It would be terrible if you paid £1500 for a TV with 3D technology A only for everyone to finally decide to use 3D technology B.

Novelty.....i find it gives me a headache as well as making me look like Ray Charles.

Novelty.

its here to stay get over it, i watched MvA last night on sky stunning, the golf was stunning ,cwacom on 3d blu ray on the ps3 is awesome, the footy in 3d is out of this world, the only bugbear i have is the glasses on the panny are uncomfortable thats why they have launched a revised version, gaming brings another new dimension too it with sky and sony behind it they have invested too much money into it for it too fail .

no not gonna waste my money lol

i researched tv's for ages before i bought my current one. i didn't even jump on the 1080 bandwagon because the avforums calculator showed that because of my viewing distances i wouldn't even be able to tell the difference between a 1080 set and an hd ready one. the result is that i got a great deal on a superb spec tv, really nice size (50") plus loads of USEFUL features like good sound quality and USB connection for movies etc.

no way on earth i am going to get a 3d set.

I love the TV crowd that don't think there is a difference between 720p and 1080p.

Wear decent glasses or contacts and it's like differentiating yellow from black.

many thanks for the compliment. Next you'll be telling me 100hz and 200hz don't make a difference. Enjoy watching your blu rays in full...oh wait.

All about the 600Hz brah

I'll wait for the 3D without the glasses.

i don't have a blu ray player, don't want one. i'm very happy with my set, go and stick your nose somewhere else.

Watched football in 3d a couple o times. The first 5mins I thought this is pretty cool but after a while the novelty wore of and just got annoyed wearing the glasses

That's why you won't see the difference between 720 & 1080......SD is just SD regardless. lol

yet another one misses the point.

take your lol's elsewhere.

The manufacturers want us to believe it's the next big thing (and so sell more TV's) but everybody i know including myself is pretty unexcited about it

I think 3D is just a gimmic that wont stay . I was watching the trailor from SKY filming the current Golf tournament , everythings recorded using 2 cameras . Must be very costly to process/edit etc .I cannot see every broadcaster , film company wanting in 3D except for the ocasional blockbuster..

I think 3D will take off when it's coming direct from the TV without the need for Glasses. I just think the early adopters are going to get burnt with it as the technology will move very quickly

To add from my previous post I agree , i would wait for 3d tv without the use of specs

The new 3ds has managed to utilize this allegedly , still need to try the product,

I'm gona invest in a 1080p tv as they seem to pretty cheap now

i think its fun for the cinema if its done properly like avatar was, only problem with avatar was it looked **** so i never saw it, on the tv though i think its a novelty so i wont even consider it untill you dont need the glasses lol

Well I have a 3D TV and so far I have only played Monsters V Aliens and 3D games on it as i cant find any 3D movies. I've looked on Play.com but they dont seem to sell them. Does anyone know where I can buy them from? Preferably on-line as I moved over-Sea's.

Personally I love my TV in Standard 2D. 55" of 200mhz loveliness. The 3D demo in the Store sold it for me. I walked in wanting to spend £600 and ended up spending nearly £3k! The Kids love it though.

Someone above commented that they could not get there mates to try the Glasses on, Maybe he's hanging out with the 'To Smooth to move' set but I have the opposite problem. I have to turn the TV on everytime people come over as they all wanna try it out. Most people think its amazing too.

I reccon if everyone claims it to be a gimmick without actually trying it for themselves then of course it will never take off. Personally I think they are just peeved at having to fork out another £1000 minimum to upgrade there TV so bad mouth it instead.

Syzable

A technology that will move very quickly? u do realise this technology has been dormant for quite a number of years already?

As for 3d without glasses, aka auto stereo, you will be waiting a very long time, the nintendo 3ds is designed for one person to view, at one angle, and obviously works to a certain extent, however, a tv in your living room being viewed by multiple people at different angles just isn't feasible at present, and even if it was, it would cost a fortune.

Here's a guy who bought one, lost the receipt so he can't return it and now feels the need to justify it. X)

I honestly can't see the point in 3d. It's a gimmick mainly for the studios to charge a higher price at the box office and to add a little 'wow' factor. It'll wear off. Already I'm over it and the most annoying thing is watching films that were made with a 3d version in mind and have things flying out of the screen.

Two things - firstly is it doesn't 'immerse' you in the film world or had anything. It takes you out because you're used to traditional '2D' images. Secondly, tv and film is already '3D' in that it uses light and shade to create depth.

Until they can get rid of the glasses and rubbish viewing angle, it's going to be a niche product.

I used to like you byker, byker grove, but you can lol off!!
