Is a bank transfer a safe way to pay for a phone from a private online seller?

Found 15th May
What happens if the phone doesn't arrive in the post, or is not as described?
The seller is saying PayPal isn't a safe option because you don't need to provide ID to open a PayPal account...
Can anyone give me any advice please? Thanks

No. Stay well clear. Once he's got the money you've pretty much no way of getting it back should the phone "get lost in the post".

Paypal IS safe - especially so for a buyer. Avoid this purchase at all costs.

Unless it's someone you know I wouldn't be sending any payment via bank transfer. If they won't accept PayPal forget it.

Don't do it. PayPal is a very safe option for buyers as you can get your money back if there is a problem. There is no protection at all with Bank Transfers.

Thank you very much miikeyblue, yug0 and chancooluk for your fast replies - I'm grateful

My dad sent postal cheque to a seller for an exercise bike. It never came and that money was gone for good. Why he done that is a mystery? Scammed I guess. Buyer Beware!

Don't do it, or even with PayPal

PAYPAL ONLY. Do not send money by bank transfer!!!

NO USE PAYPAL GOODS AND SERVICES OR COLLECT LOCAL FROM THEIR HOUSE

That wasn't a withdrawal though. You or I could not take those details to a bank and obtain money with them.

the bank can trace the account and provide info to the police surely. whether the police could've been bothered to investigate is a separate issue

Blimey, if you are clever enough to access the web you should no bank transfer is safe way to pay but you have no back up service should anything go wrong.
