Is a PS3 blu ray player as good as a stand alone blu ray player

Cant decide whether to spend the extra and get a PS3 which would include the all important blu ray player that i really need, just concerned that the quality might not be so good as a stand alone player?

Thinking if I am going to pay £100-£150 on a blu ray player could spend the £70 extra to get one of the new PS3 slims

Any views?

Yes defiantly, reason being its consistently updated!

think its probably better getting the ps3, you get all the extras of games, internet, harddrive plus its always getting updated by sony with new features, not as easy to update a standalone blu-ray player i suspect.
and you can always get the playtv thing to go with it. giving you sky+ type features on freeveiw channels.

Definately worth getting a ps3 than a standalone, you'll not only get a blu ray player and games console but also a multimedia center

But can the PS3 be hacked to make it multi region ?

Better as you get updates, plus a free games console, and a George Forman grill all rolled into one. And you can use it as a media streamer which is nice.

PS3's gaming and other "media player" features are a massive bonus as wel as the future upgrades but I think we may have seen the last of the feature upgrades. If you are looking at stand-alone players find out the "startup" times only the new, good ones are quick as the PS3 - my friend has a £1000 Pioneer that takes over 3 minutes from inserting the disk to seeing the menu - very annoying

The disks are very very slow compared to DVD.

No hacks yet and unlikely but many disks are region free and only concern if you import disks.

Mine still refuses to make the tea, no matter how long I stand over it shouting. On the other hand it does paly blu-rays very well.

Should try my HD DVD Player, i can go off for extended holidays while its working itself up to see if theres a disc inserted or not.

I get new stuff as it comes out in the US on region 1 dvd.
I'm not having 'the studios' dictate when I can buy a new movie. So if I can't get a region free player, I won't be bothering with BR...

i think you may find the videophiles will declare that a standalone bluray player will be better.

same argument as separates against a mini hi-fi system

i would imagine a dedicated bluray player, designed from the ground up as being just a player, will inevitably be better than a games console. however, would the average man or woman in the street be able to discern the difference? possibly not.

anyway, some people do not want a ps3.

The videophiles do agree, but you will probably need to spend more that £229 on a Blu-Ray player to get this sort of quality. At £229 it is very good and the DVD upscaling is fantastic compared to most kit under several hundred pounds.

arguably better than standalone

My 360 HD-DVD drive on my PC is really fast.

PC's are quick like the PS3 because they have the faster drives, processing power and memory to crunch through the menus (I think its Java based).

HD-DVD on PC then FTW
