Is a sub £500 Gaming PC possible?

There's been a couple of deals posted recently for a £400 Acer 'Gaming' PC. Many of the posts point out that although the PC can play games, it's specs leave it some distance from being a gaming PC.

So, as the title says, if I add £100 to the kitty, is it possible to buy / build a gaming PC on this budget?

My curent PC might have been considered a gaming PC when I bought it, but that was 4+ years ago, so I'm not sure there is much salvagable from it. I did replace the power supply and Graphics card about 18 months ago (a silverline 500W PSU & Gainward ATI Radeon HD 4850 "Golden Sample" 512MB card), I haven't really kept up with advances, so have no idea if these would be of use in a new build...

Posts on the 2 acer deals point to £750 as being a figure that would deliver a gaming system, but I've not got that much, even £500 is pushing it TBH.

Qny thoughts / idea's for a build would be appreciated.

    E.M.

The first link looks to have some good info, but the prices in the 2nd are out of my budget.

It's a tough arena to get into, things change so quickly that my knowledge seems way out of date.

Can get a decent one for about £500 (I5 2500, 4GB ram, GTX460). That ACer … Can get a decent one for about £500 (I5 2500, 4GB ram, GTX460). That ACer for £400 is not a gaming PC, it's crap and won't run any half modern game at any decent settings.

Are any of the scan \ ebuyer barebone bundles worth it?

I've just had a shufti a Toms hardware Hierarchy chart. The HD4850 I use is in the 8th row, is the GTX460 (in the 6th row) that much better? I'm not calling into question your judgement, I'm genuinely interested, how much difference would 2 steps up in the hierarchy give me?

    Thanks

Well a GTX560 is better but have to work with your budget. I don't use … Well a GTX560 is better but have to work with your budget. I don't use ATI so no idea about the 4850 but the GTX460 is a good mid range card that can handle most games reasonably well. Scan barebones tend to be overpriced, and ebuyer don't do them do they?

I guess I need to start pricing up some things to see how much I have to play with for graphics cards etc.

I thought ebuyer had some last time I looked, but could be called something else / I imagined it....

You can get a great gaming pc from ebuyer for under £500
If you look you can get a gaming pc for under £300
    Gaming motherboard 69.00 ebuyer.com/pro…849
    RAM 37.00 ebuyer.com/pro…122
    CPU 103.00 ebuyer.com/pro…673
    GPU 83.00 ebuyer.com/pro…356
    POWER SUPPLY 47.00 ebuyer.com/pro…927
    CASE UNDER £20
    iNTERNAL 1TB HDD £42 ebuyer.com/pro…435
    DVD Drive 15.00 ebuyer.com/pro…621

ALL EQUALS £416 STRAIGHT FROM EBUYER. I garentee you that you can save at least £100 from looking around. Then you can get a high class GPU which will cope with ANYTHING. YOU DONT NEED EXPENSIVE INTEL PROCESSORS AND MOTHERBOARDS FOR A FULLY FLEDGED GAMING RIG

^^ Person above knows nothing, GPU is not the only important thing, lots … ^^ Person above knows nothing, GPU is not the only important thing, lots of games are now CPU limited aswell, it's worth getting SAndybridge just to future proof, and it's not that much more.

I would have thought u would know that no game fully uses all the processing power of a quad core.
The GPU is the the key... Lets me see how much you know and show us what you recommend, considering the person doesnt have over £500
