Is getting twitter messages sent to your phone free?

As title, I want to get some sent to my phone, but their site says they don't charge but depending on your texting plan the mobile network might charge you?

I've got a standard contract phone, 100 texts I think but that's for sending, not receiving. So basically, are these premium messages I might be charged for or not?

    what mobile do you have?

It's there due to US/Canada where you can pay to receive messages, know lots of users in uk who have text notification set up and don't pay.

What phone do you have? Maybe a app that sends push messages would do?

Well, I just wanted e-mail notifications but can't find the option, thought that would be automatic but didn't get any e-mails to yesterday's updates.

I have a really basic Nokia. Like a 4-bit processor or somethink.

Ah, so it's aimed at US/Canada, why can't they just say that ffs!

as far as I know you only get email updates for new followers or direct messages. I was going to suggest the app route even something like snaptu which doesn't need a smart phone to run.

Orange PAYG here and i get free text alerts from BBC breaking news.

Yeah, that's what I've worked out, why they'll send texts but not e-mails which must be cheaper is beyond me.

I'll try putting my phone number in and if it charges me then I'll stop it after the first bill!

    Thanks for all help.
