Is giving someone my bank details safe for a BT

Done a deal with someone on here.Their paypal not woorking so they asked if they can do BT?Please help me decide if this is safe

Yes as long as they dont promise you $10,000,000 and are in Nigeria!

only thing you can do with the details is send a payment and set up a direct debit, but if they do the latter, your covered by your bank for anything under the direct debit guarantee

i would prefer to recieve via bt, but prefer to send as paypal

as i can see the money has been sent in paypal

(i can never get my internet banking working lol )

i prefer BT normally, i have used BT to sell and buy probably at least 75 times (here and on another forum) safe as houses, your only giving them what bank, account number, sortcode and name.
They cant do much with that believe me.

    Ive never had a problem...

thats all some need to start ident fraud.so not that safe !!!!!

depends on your bank and their bank ....... most banks are signed up to a fast pay system where it should be in your account within 2 hours but sometimes could be 5 days ( i had to wait this long once)

yes I am worried it seems weird giving a stranger your details....I wont send until money received or shall I just wait for his paypal to be fixed

course its not safe a DD could be set up from those details.

if ur unsure just ask for some other form of payment.

its your choice ....... sending bt has NO chargebacks etc (paypal does) and its quick and easy

i do prefer paypal but you will have to wait 7 days to send to your bank account & pay 25p for the honour (if sending under £50)

don't start scaring the poor woman .......... IF a dd is set up then they are covered by their bank under the direct debit guarentee, you can view this on a DD form or on any website offering dd payments

Not really identity fraud...they would need a good base, and to be honest how many people really do it let alone come on here for that purpose? I doubt even 1% try...

Yeah 2hrs or upto 5days, most banks have the fast system now though.
And exactly why you shouldnt worry about giving out numbers...as you said.

I would say BT is just as safe as paypal...as alike the other guy is scarying you off saying direct debits could be set up...hell with your paypal address i could try and get into your paypal by guessing password/trying forgotten password details...

its odds and numbers, unlikely, very.
To be honest i first started buying and selling on AVForums, and a lot over there only use BT and i believe on my 30 transactions over there only about 5 of them have been through PP!

On here lots of people are using it instead of ebay it seems now, thus lots of usage on paypal.

I find BT is no worry. No hidden charges or periods of waiting for your money.

If you are worried (which you shouldnt be), you could always ask for a cheque.

    no its NOT SAFE

i gave some one those details and had a mobile phone took out in my name.so stopped the dd and then 7 months later had a debt collector banging on my door for £1500 bill that had not been paid useing my bank details

so its up to you but id beware..just get them to send you a postal order or cheque
or even the cash in the post (and before you say it.sent insured mail)

also send you a lot of spam, sign up for rude websites :whistling:

i find paypal is handy if you want cash available for spending online ... if i sell over £50 i always give the option of BT, but under £50 i ask for paypal .... but if the buyer wants BT i will accept (done one for £3 yeterday)

mate you are so wrong. you'll only realise if it happened to you how common fraud is. online or not. look at the registered members on this site, do you really think theyve all registered for one purpose..to hunt for bargains? for some its data mining and thats what they do.

everyone has a price and i could do a transaction and everything is hunky dory. maybe a month or two down the line i might decide to sell your bank details and you wont have a clue who did it and when because youve probably made so many other bank transfers throughout that period.

and you may be protected by your bank, but who the heck can be bothered of going through the hassle of changing account details and card details and the like??

also, dont expect the bank to just pay out. a thorough investigation will take place. the money wont get to you immediately and if the transfer was for a large sum..well. good luck.

and do a search on what happened to JEREMY CLARKSON when he had the same silly naive views as some of you...'oh they cant do nothing with my bank details blah blah'

he got done for quite abit of money....which thankfully went to a charity!

you obviously know nothing about BT payments ..... i have done 6 on here and NEVER had any problems .......

BT is faster and safer than any other payment method as all bank accounts accept them, where as not everyone has paypal

Yeah and i use to work in a call centre environment and i was the team leader of team leaders :-D
We took all their debit/credit card details for one off payments, and for direct debits we took the details you would give someone for a BT on here...but we send a letter to the address which is registered at that bank, and if they do not sign and return within 28days no payment is taken (followed up with a call of course).

Then if you changed a direct debit the same rules applied, and we would check with the bank...so your talking tosh mate...unless of course your company doesnt play by the legal rules?
Maybe thats it...he is the scammer? :whistling:

Mate get over it fraud does happen everyday we all know it does, but as long as your careful, follow the rules...ie get the persons full details, confirm their identity over the phone if need be (i have done a few times) then your be alright.

Furthermore, the people who contribute a lot on here are no way databasing it mate...your full of the BS...the dedicated members on here are probably some of the best and most trustworthy people your come accross...dammit we should have a clearing before your allowed to sign up for this site...stop people like you posting EVER!

no, look stop arguing mate i work IN one of these places. if you ring them up, 99% will not ask for any form of ID. only to verify the account holder is there.

That would be very silly of you. So the person stops the DD and the bank link it to your BB account and you get locked up. If people want to scam your details they will. Every phone shop, mag subscription and call center agent earning minimum wage can steal your details.
What happens if your papal gets hacked (paypal wont admit how many it is) then they transfer it from your bank to your paypal account and out to a non registered paypal account and then on through 50 more. Good luck on trying to get that one back.
