iirc someone said amazon threatened publishers to match bookstore prices because they weren't making enough.

Same happened with MP3s years ago, expect ebook prices to fall within 3years.

As I understand it there is a fee, or a percentage taken from the rrp.

I've a mate who's and author and his agent has just published a number of his out of print works on Kindle (and Nook ?) and I'm sure he said there was a cost involved. I think it might have been the cost of converting the subject matter to the right format ?

Amazon wanted to charge what ever prices they wanted for books, basically undercut everyone like supermarkets. Apple came in and said that they wanted a uniform price across all retailers, something like $13.99, a book. The result is that Apple have convinced many publishers to side with them and introduce a set price. ebook prices are high because of Apple.

HTC Desire Guide?

The price of e-books is ridiculous when you consider that you dont actually own the book. You are using it on licence from amazon, so in effect it's a expensive long term library.
