Is it Legal to take rocks/stones from the Beach

I was down the beach tonight with the nippers after finishing work. To cut a long story short I found a big rock that I wanted for my Beardie (Bearded Dragon). Whilst carrying it back to the car I got some some funny looks. My Missus told me when I got home that it's cos it's illegal to take rocks from beaches. I've asked the google machine but get no relevant results. Anyone know?

Not illegal to take shells but rocks, pebbles etc are an environmental issue so DEFRA have laws to keep beaches intact.......which is why you can buy rocks etc in DIY stores.....understandable really.

    I am not suffering.

I haven't read any fiction since the last year of Secondary School & I am certainly not going to read anything about religion.

I hope the Ambassador enjoys your company at his party, though.

I did, it was a short lived spectacular with that wonderful fella off the gadget show (Jason). I won £15k shared amongst my 2 brothers and I. I'm sure it's available on YouTube somewhere.

I've also been through a divorce, Uni degree and changed job a couple of times during the decade that has passed.

I don't know why you think he might be referring to me. As it happens, I did makes some....erm...a (brief) appearance in a big-budget TV series, playing alongside Vincent D'Onofrio, but I'm pretty sure I've never mentioned it before.

So I can blame you lot for the coastal erosion that is about to claim my house

no but seriously that's why you're not allowed to take the rocks, they break up the power behind the waves before they hit land. None of you do geography?

Yep - I have all my rocks stashed away so that when CID burst the door down and arrest me for being a rock thief I can plead for leniency. I do get them out at night under the covers...to give em a quick polish. :whistling:

My understanding is that any large scale removal is illegal. ie for commercial purposes without licence but including taking away sand or gravel in quantities for your rockery etc. You cannot go with a trailer and stock up. The occasional 'pilfering' of pebbles or fossils is ok.

For gold and mineral extraction however I think you are allowed to take up to 1 tonne of material without licence for 'research and investigation' purposes.

"Well ive made a full rockery, several wood bark fires and buckets full of shells" -

That's nothing. I've made a life size replica of the gobi dessert in my back garden from all the sand brought home in our shoes, socks, swimwear, bags and other nooks and crevices which I am unable to specify on a family forum.

Can a Mod please explain why this thread has had a massive clean up? Nothing offensive has been said anywhere and it (despite it's age) is probably the most active thread on ask/misc.

You can collect anything that lands (washed up) on a public access beach where the original owner cannot be traced, and that includes flotsam and jetsam and loose fossils. Go for it!
