Is it OK to do a "Quick Format" on a brand new drive, or are there any advantages to doing anything else please?

    As above really.
Should I do anything other than a "Quick Format" on a brand new drive?

    If so, why?

I always do a full format on a new drive, rather than a quick. It takes longer I know but I always have. If you need to I dont know?

From then on when I format I always do a quick, unless there has been a problem with the drive.

Just do a quick one, it'll be fine.

Basically a quick won't write to the entire drive meaning it also effective skips checking the drive surface; generally with modern drives this should have already been done at factory so unless sectors have been damaged in transit it should be okay. That said, if you don't mind waiting a few minutes\hours, a full will give that little bit of piece of mind (or you can do a full error check later...)

quick is fine... just overwrites the file allocation table to free all sectors up.

Another vote for a quick scan for reasons already mentioned.

    Thanks for the advice guys.
    I now understand the difference.
Think I will kick it off in a mo and leave it overnight.

    Repped you all. http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn219/jumpingphil/giggle1.gif

You're going for the paranoid option then?!?

so the unanimous opinion is a quick format (takes a minute) but you're gonna do a full one anyway? oO

Full format on a new drive / new O/S install can save much time and hair loss later.

Quick format only if using a drive that has already recently had a full format.

I have never formatted a new drive quick or full in my life. I'm missing out.

    quickie

Never bought a new drive then have you as all internals come unformatted.

    Who mentioned internals(apart from you)?

    Who mentioned external.

    lollingtons.

Full format first time round for me. It may have been checked at the factory but who knows what it's been subjected to since!

Looked like 4:3 to me at that point, hardly unanimous. http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn219/jumpingphil/what.gif
