Is Nokia Maps a practical substitute for a stand alone Satnav?

Are the Satnav features good enough to replace a DECENT stand alone Satnav unit?
Does it lack features such as full and partial post code search?
    Does it remember previous journeys?

    Any feedback appreciated.

I use nokia maps on my 5800 and its spot on. Does full postcode searches and yep remembers previous journeys. I'd say it does more than an adequate as a stand alone sat nav.

Maybe not as good as a Garmin but far better than any Tomtom i've used

Thanks. How much would a Garmin cost that is better? And would it come with free map updates which I presume the Nokia will?

Its does the job well and since it connects to the internet on the move, traffic reports, weather, map updates, speed cameras, speed limits, and road works are up to the minute. Good local services functions with the ability to ring on the fly et etc

BIG Bonus, you can pre load all maps from all over the world for free, with 3d landmarks, plus change the voice for street names as well.

You can use a Nokia Account to create routes of your choice online and pick them up when you connect to Nokia Maps on your phone.

Use nokia sports tracker at the same time to record your past routes, then upload live or after your trip to see where you've been on Google maps.

If you don’t have a data plan I presume you can still use it using a PAYG SIM and get the full Satnav functionality excluding the auto updates?

I’m considering the 5230 which has GPS and 3G but no WiFi so how do I update the maps etc without a data plan? Can you connect the phone to a PC via USB and update that way or is it only via an SD-Card?

yeah you can download the Nokia OVI computer suite which allows you to configure (Via USB or Bluetooth) what maps you want, take back-ups of your contacts, texts, pics, music and sync your outlook diary for appointments etc.

Yes but you will need to turn off 3G connectivity in the program, else you'll use all your credit up. It will also cause it to take longer to find a GPS signal. You will also need to turn off Advanced GPS on the phone settings.

Thanks. Of course, it’s an A-GPS system so uses the cellular network. Does it actually eat into your data allowance just by using the A-GPS functionality?
