Is our Wii on it's way out?

We have had our wii just over two years (yes, about two weeks outside it's two year warranty!).

Suddenly one of the remote controls doesn't work (the back button makes the character jump on Mario Kart) and several of the games don't want to play, saying there is an error.

We bought a Wii Cleaning Disc but this doesn't seem to have done the trick. Can we really need a new remote control and new games or could it be a problem with the wii itself? Is there a Wii repair shop or is it cheaper just to buy new?

If it's only one of the remotes have you tried turning the good one off and activating the one giving the trouble on another wireless channel and trying it again. If it gives you the same problem, it's the remote and not the console.

Game disc won't play, this might be that you need a system update

    google it, Wii system update

There is a known problem with early models not being able to play certain games, due to a build up of dust. This was a big problem when Smash Bros was released. Worth giving NofE customer support a call I reckon, as they were taking back and cleaning up these systems for free.

Of course, your game discs may just need a clean........?

It was with dual layer disks afaik.

Yes you are right - Smash Bros was the first of these I think, hence the problem appearing then.

If the problem is with all games, it is probably something else.

It's not with all games, just a couple.

Yes, Nintendo of Europe - if the problem is with Smash Bros Brawl, they will take your console in, clean it and send it back, for free............

    From NofE website (]http//ww…tml):

If you have recently purchased Super Smash Bros. Brawl and are experiencing technical problems playing the game on your Wii, please read the following information to learn how this issue can be resolved.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl utilises a double-layer disc which has a large memory capacity. A very small percentage of Wii consoles may have trouble consistently reading data off this large capacity disc if there is some contamination on the lens of the disc drive. Nintendo has specialised cleaning equipment that can resolve this problem. Please do NOT attempt to clean the lens yourself, as you may damage the system.

If you are experiencing disc read errors, please contact consumer Support. They will provide information regarding sending your Wii to Nintendo to have the disc drive lens cleaned. There is no cost for the repair or shipping. (Please note: Returning the disc to the retail store will not solve the problem. We encourage users who are experiencing issues with playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl to utilise Nintendo’s repair service.)

Due to the nature of this particular issue, Wii owners should not lose any of their stored data, such as Virtual Console games and WiiWare software. In some rare cases you may have to re-download this software from the Wii Shop Channel, but there is no cost to doing so.

The NofE support page is here:

The service centre is based in Farlington, near Southampton. Number is 0870 6060247.

They were pretty decent when I had issues with my Wii about 18 months ago.

Thanks for the info. We haven't got smash brawl (although I do have it to give to my son for Christmas). Maybe I'll give them a call anyway.

Thank you very much for all your help - rep will be left in a mo!
