Is the CPW sale's guy correct / is he even allowed to say this ???

popped into CPW and asked about the iphone had a little play with one so i decided to get one,

paid for it etc and for some reason he started talking about unlocking them (he said eh had sold 16 today and was 99% sure most would be unlocked rather then joining o2 contract)

he then said that it wouldnt be that easy as they take the cards details (used to pay) and charge the contract to that, surely he is lieing but what i want to no is how do they get away with things like this

CPW....... He would have been 17 years old and his manager would have been 18:whistling:

Yes hes lieing (or rather scaremongering) trying to basically frighten you into not unlocking it, the manager probably instructed him on what to say when he sells one mate!!!

    lol yeah pretty much

It is possibility to track buyer, thats for sure, unless u pay cash and dont give your true deatails.

Do you actually sign a contract which states you will activate and use one of the O2 tariffs? Thats the important bit - if you don't, he is clearly lying...

i suppose it all depends whats in the contract you sign when buying the phone, i suppose they could chase you up if wanted

Presumably they must give you a copy of all the terms and conditions...

I'd agree that its unlikely they could do either, but....

It is entirely possible (even likely) that they could disable the phone if you failed to take out a contract. Done via iTunes - maybe at the time of the launch of the 3G version. However, I am not entirely convinced deliberately "breaking" the phone would be legal either!

Its definately a weird one! Apple is normally very much on the ball, and because of that, I really cant see them trading as foolishly as appears to be the case at the moment! Fingers crossed though.

Don't know much about this but the following is from CPW website if it's helpful to anyone :

That appears to suggest they acknowledge that they sold you the item as a phone, but that you could chose not to do so and just use it is an iPod!

This is stupid so is anyones reply in this thread that took whatever he said seriously, most staff who work in retail dont know what they are talking about but like to pretend they do as they have such a rare position of authority when they talk to customers, completely disregard what he said. End of.

They could just IMEI block every phone used on any network that's not on … They could just IMEI block every phone used on any network that's not on the O2 contract, then the phone works, just only with the contract. Would be pretty simple to do aswell.

no they couldn't, and it wouldn't be simple, they wouldn't be allowed to for a start, as the CEIR isn't meant to be used like that.
