downloading copyrighted material is infact illegal , therr is no such thing as Free music

Try spotify if you want to listen to music , and as for shareaza when downloading a file , make sure you have the share option and browse option turned off , or choose a specific folder in which people can access files from you , by default this is usually your dowloads folder

Yep, if you want free stuff you'll find the odd track from unsigned artists etc but i'm pretty sure thats not what the op is after.

shareaza is illegal

Something is only illegal if you allow yourself to be caught:thumbsup:

Personally I would avoid peer2peer systems that allow your IP address to be shown.:w00t:

For me its newsgroups connecting via a SSL all the way:whistling:

For listening to music on your PC/Laptop though Spotify is great

Not neccesarily, the content on iplayer is copyrighted but you can legally download it. It's not up to you to work out if the provider has permission to give you a copy, it's up to them to make sure they're not giving out anything they shouldn't. That's why people get done for sharing to others via p2p not for downloading.

Is that some form of justification?

Do you use that for all things?

You admitted to using newsgroups.

I just think it's unfair to take something without paying for it. Punishing musicians/music companies for your own failings in life just isn't on.

OP - you don't get anything for nothing. Here endeth the lesson.

That's what i said.

Downloading copyrighted material from any p2p or torrent site is illegal, the closest you'll get to being able to download anything you want legally will be a site like Napster where you pay a monthly fee, otherwise you'll just have to buy tracks one at a time.

Which isn't exactly true, I pointed out that it can be perfectly legal.

Where is this law anyway that says you can't download music legally? AFAIK you can't give it out but don't think there's a law to say you can't get it yourself.

Closer, but I still haven't seen any laws saying that it's illegal to download anything, only that it's illegal to give out something you don't have permission to do so.

There isn't one, the illegal part is in the distribution which is why usenet beats torrents. The provider is the guilty party not the downloader. Music suxcks anyway.

Thanks Shengis, glad someone knows what they're talking about.

But surely if you have stolen goods on your possesion (ie your computer) then your effectively handling stolen property and therefore committing a crime?

And if you record a program off the TV you're also committing a crime. Didn't stop the sale of VCR's/DVD and now HD recorders. Same with taping the top 40 from the radio. Go figure

But if i pay my tv license and my monthly subscription to my tv provider then dont i have the right to record it? I've paid for it after all? And therefore am not stealing it?

Nope.
If you pay to go to the cinema have you paid to see the film over and over again without having to pay each time?

Laws are weird.

See now you're thinking like a pir8  I agree, the law and dodgy organisations like the RIAA/MPAA unfortunately aren't as wise as us:w00t:

That's a question of semantics - strictly speaking you're exchanging your time and attention for the ability to listen to music.

Obviously there's no financial cost, but it's not 'free'.
