£50 was a bit out of my budget, and I think 120gb will be sufficient enough for me, im currently using a 12GB one which is pants, when I recieve the new one ill use the 12gb one as a backup disk for photos and stuff.

Thanks for everyones opinions, I guess it was pretty average all tho I could have got a better make from scan.

Yep, ATA-100 and ATA-133 are just names for IDE as is PATA (Parallel ATA). The newer SATA (Serial ATA) based hard drives are a different technology entirely and not compatible with IDE/PATA

Hey Imran. What do you know about installing OS onto an external HD for use on a lappy?

I want to use my work laptop (which is significantly smaller than my own one), but obviously cant do the things I want to on their OS and HD. I have managed to get linux running on a memory stick - but not managed to get my USB mobile modem to work with it. So have tried installing XP (the same OS as they use - but first removed the HD). It always gets so far, then bluescreens. Its driving me nuts! I had thought about plonking a drive into it, then using that in the USB drive, which I think would work. Only problem with that, is the fact it uses a proprietory 1.8" drive. (Ive even got a couple of spare 1.8" drives - but different connectors - which is a shame.)

    Any ideas?

And apology to the OP for an obvious thread hijack - which I can take to PM if Imran has any ideas!

12gb.. ouch! what laptop do you have? you will love the freedom! (plus you may see a performance boost since the new drive will have improved technology and you wont have to defrag as much plus paging MAY improve since there is more room.

Windows doesn't support what you want to do hence hitting the problem when you try to boot, rather stupidly it will let you get so far rather than just kicking you straight out at the initial setup. I did see a solution using a preinstallation environment recently but I haven't checked it out and don't know if it could actually offer as much as it claimed.

buy a u3drive: ebuyer.com/pro…850 (any size will do really just need it to run a smallish app)
    download u3package factory: eure.ca/
download MS virtual pc 2007: microsoft.com/win…spx

convert virtual pc using package factory.

create a virtual PC (any os you like) you need the OS CD... the virtual PC acts as a REAL PC.. it just uses the host pc's optical drives and stuff if you allow it to. it has its own ipadd and everything.

use an external HDD and store your newly created virtual pc files on it.

copy the virtual PC u3 program you created onto your memory stick.

stick both into your work PC.. run virtual PC program off the memory stick and select the Virtual pc files off the external HDD... it opens up as a window that has a desktop inside it (like remote desktop) press alt gr + enter then it will maximize and act as the real computer.

and there you go.... watch all the porn..ahem... i mean do all the "other" work you wanted to do on your work pc and your boss wont have a clue.

Yeh, Ive seen the BartPE solution, but it frightens the carp out of me! I have tried it - and have it on the USB drive now - but fails to boot - even after making the drive bootable.

Obviously the work PC is completely locked down. I deffo couldnt install the modem drivers anyway. Yes, Ive got one of those USB sticks that will (alledgely) allow it to use its own browser and captures the cache and history on the stick, but I aint gonna take any chances! (Once bitten twice shy!) No, the information is quite accurate - the steps you posted are not a solution at all, at best it's a messy workaround. Also I would agree with the 'Epic fail' comment regarding the solution you posted, I wouldn't make that suggestion even for people I dislike. U3 should have died a long time ago, it's a vicious piece of work.

oh my days... you call that an EPIC FAIL??

I ran the app from my memory stick saw my virtual machines sitting inside the list. I didnt run them just incase but I dont see why it wouldnt work... it would be an EPIC FAIL if everyone in the world had already tried this and i was the last to know......

as far as i know i'm the first to think this up..... no one has converted virtual pc and put it on the web and all other options need a rocket scientist to make happen.

bottom line is, if it was so easy and a well trodden route then everyone would have an OS in their back pocket but how many people do you know do?

the RAM on my main comp died and i haven't been home long enough since exams to sort it out. once i do... (will have to be in september when i get back from NY) i'll let you guys know...

I wasn't referring to BartPE, while useful as a diagnostic/repair environment I don't think it's at all suitable for what you're after. I'll see if I can dig up the post, it was something along the lines of using the PE to build the runtime for the main Windows. It's not something I needed at the time so I didn't look into it at all.

Its not something Ive ever heard of before to be honest - but I have had a quick look on the links. Booting into the companies OS and creating a virtual PC isnt a route I want to take. I wouldnt trust something like that and I would have no idea if there are security measures in place to catch users out. The chances are there is!

What I mean to say (without quoting people) is that I doubt it'd work. I haven't personally tried it... I've never used VirtualPC, just VmWare.

There is a lot wrong with U3, I never let that rubbish anywhere near any of my PCs and certainly not a work PC. Your 'solution' is not that at all, I was the one that pointed out it wasn't possible due to Windows limitations for which you called me a 'n00b'

You are quite right - I would certainly not let that on a work PC here, wouldn't even let U3 on as its attempts to create its virtual CD drive can go quite wrong especially when it's trying to worm its way onto a locked system.
