abusing the system maybe illegal no

I would of thought you should of got at least 1 days pay even if a reduced rate, Otherwise that company could just keep doing that and getting free labour from all the people applying. Not 100% on the law side of it though.

No, it's not illegal.

OP why even accept a days work for free ?
It could be a scam to get someone in to cover & so I would suggest keeping the screen shots or paper adverts & see if they do it again on the next bank holiday.

If they asked you to stay on for a extra 4 hours I would contact them & ask for pay as you helped them out & it looks like your not getting a job from them again anyway.

If your still young & don't have the confidence to call them, then get your parents to call them as you should be getting some sort of pay from them.

Also Citizens Advice will tell you what to do.

I can see where the OP is coming from, If you genuinely thought you would get a job at the end of it all then you wouldn't walk out as that would jeapodise getting the Job.

I would do as WheresMeNuts says and contact them though, especially with it being bank holiday, They sound like a tight company that didn't want to pay their normal staff time and a half or even double time as it was Bank holiday!

Just wanted to give it best shot of getting the job,the alarming thing was they had another guy on trial as they wanted 2 workers and he would have had to do everything if i wasnt there, hard enough with 2 people let alone 1

why even start to think of working for a company thats clearly out to rip you off from the first min
A ½ decent company would take you on and say you've got a days trail and we'll take it from there
They could easily sack you after a hour if you couldn't do the job and pay you off cash in hand

cheers people, even if they do turn out to offer me the job i think i'll say no now anyway

If they where as short staffed as you say then they would have offered you the job at the end of that day.
They only get away with scamming people if people let them.
I would get my revenge in another way,but that's just me.

My question would be if you are not employed by the company then are you insured if you do any work for them?

I used to get ppl to do half hour work as part of an interview, so I could see if they could handle the heavy lifting and if I caught them standing round talking after 15 minutes! Doing 6 hours is pushing it a little!

Were all the ppl you were working with on interview the same day lol? Would be a great scam, need a whole farm worth of stuff picking, just get hundreds of people to do a day's work for an interview lol! Free labour.

No i didnt even have interview first, just had to fill out quick form and then straight in the kitchen,it was weird being left by the manager to be shown what to do by somone else on a trial day who had been there for half hour

They must pay you minimum wage.
If they have not done this then they are in breach of employment law

I take it that it's a Restaurant or something of the sort.If it was, just go back in, order some food and don't pay for it - There's your payment.

Or while you're there, just say you found a cockroach or something in your food. Most of the people eating out will think twice before going back.

The job centre do work trials, is it possible the manager thought that was the case with you? linky i thinky
