Is this illegal- refusing a voucher without terms

Hi, i had a voucher saved up for the sales (it is a £10 off voucher at a very posh but private run perfume shop in central london )
went there- picked up a perfume, showed voucher- guy at desk said- voucher only valid with a spend off over £50. i was spending £40. He said the perfume was already on sale andmade excuses. i said this is such false advertising and why th voucher does not say this then

voucher has no expiry, nor does it have any terms and conditions

he showed me new voucher (£10 off when you spend £50) to prove i was wrong.

thinking of calling up trading standards- anyone hav ideas on whose in the wrong and what i can do about it.

They can do what they want... usually at the Discretion of the manager. Which is annoying as...

It's like the old free packet of Walkers crisps (You know the one you got in the blue bag in the pack of crisps), but no one ever accepted the voucher.

don, they did in nottingham, i used to love it, buy a packet of crisps, enjoy them, go to the shop get a new packet for free.

    Yup, in Birmingham too!

    I think you're on a loser.

There is only a contract at the tender point, being you make the offer of money at the till and they can choose to accept or reject.

As there are no terms and conditions, whether or not the shop is in the right depends on whether someone had to pay for the voucher or whether it was just money off.

The terms might have been in the ad like £10 off when you spend £50.

If it has been paid for, then legally, they cannot refuse it.

They can refuse the voucher as they please.

Try writing them a polite letter.

AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH had loads of those free packet vouchers back in the day... could never ruddy use them... damn london corner shops!!!

If I remember rightly it was to the value of 28p most corner shops charge way more and so did other shops, but whenever I tried for a packet that was more I had to pay the difference which was fair enough. I can understand refusing them as they would have to send the ruddy things off to Walkers to redeem them.

re OP: Should have said fine your loss of sale bye!

Nothing you can do, you can waste a stamp and write a letter... it happens unfortunately.

It's like when you go to get student discount... and they turn round and say... oh no, not on sale items (Doesn't say anything in terms and conditions with NUS)
Another one iI encounterd is at GAME in Aldershot... "Got my NUS mate to get student discount"...
"Sorry we don't do student discount at this branch as there aren't any schools nearby" (Which there are, as well as Universities and colleges.... the idiot)... we only do Armed Forces discount.

    It happens...

    Game do student discount?
well to hell i didnt know that.

There is something you can do, statements like yours are the reason why retailers/businesses can get away with it.
