Is this okay?

I'm looking to buy a new pc, I've just spotted this on scan

scan.co.uk/Tod…spx

Scroll down to the Intel core 2 quad thing, is that an actual PC or the parts for that price? Confused. lol.

Thanks

I'd say this was a bare bones system unit where you have to add other components like hard drive memory n stuff.....

scan.co.uk/Tod…spx just most of the bits I think. You will need an OS and a PSU, HD, mem. keyboard, monitor etc.

Yeah, I was thinking that then I couldn't find more info, eg ram/HD.

Have you guys got any suggestions on were to get a (custom built maybe?) good PC for around £300, maybe stretch to £400?

I've tried arbico, overclockers and a few others just not that much clued up on some of the parts.

I would like:
4GB Ram (or 3gb if it doesn't make a difference)
An average graphics card, not fussed if it's not the best.. it's not going to be used for gaming, maybe the odd games like Sims but nothing special.
A decent processor, I'm not clued up on them though.
500gb HD, or around 320 or something. Not too fussed about that though.

So yeah, lol.

scan.co.uk/Pro…NCQ 250GB hd
scan.co.uk/Pro…ack windows xp
2GB memory

thats all ya need with the system exccept a graphics card etc

do check the prices on ebuyer etc but the basic system they gave is a great price

Try eBuyer.com and Dell.com These are the first ones I'd try. There are other places like Dabs.com, Misco.co.uk etc all good places, but you shouldnt have a difficult time finding a good decent system with the budget you have.

quad core = £160
memory = 3Gb = £40
500 GB hd = £45
mobo =£50
psu & case =£40-£50
gfx card = £50

use www.ebuyer.com, www.scan.co.uk, www.dabs.com, www.aria.co.uk for prices etc using the pricing above, you will have a decent gaming rig, maybe need a better gfx for the new games

I wouldn't know were to start when building it myself though, thats the problem. :P

When I said custom building, I meant like arbico were you can choose ram/different processor etc.

Is custom building really hard? I'm really not that clued up lol, I know the basics and stuff but I'm really sucky..

Would it save me money buying the parts seperate and putting them together myself or would it be like £20 cheaper?

I've used Dell and such, seen some good ones I'll have another browse about. ^^;

its pretty simple when your in the know, there is plenty of tuts online on how to do it

i started by just taking pc's apart and upgrading parts, now i can install full systems easily

people will charge a big fee to do it, will take between an hour to 3 hours depending on the system & any problems etc

Hm, would be a good experience considering I am interested in computers and such but I really wouldn't know were to start or anything, I dunno if it would be worth it.. I could do a major cockup. lol.

Thanks guys. I really am considering going self-build.

@emasu
Is that all the parts I will need? All that GDDR and 9x multiplier etc means nothing to me, this is were I suck. :[

edit; just inside manchester, bolton

pic 1 - emasu's post

1 - dvd drive
2 - case and power supply
3- memory sticks
4 - graphics card
5-mobo

pic 2-

1 -hard drive (storage)
2 - cpu / processor (probabaly the best cpu available @ moment)

all them parts would make a nice system, mind you need to factor the operating system into that too, for xp is £60 ish

going self build is an amazing experience, it opens so many new doors on what you can do, i moved on from opening computers to opening games consoles etc

im moving into computer building career..... its a fun exercise & so rewarding

Hm, I am doing computing course at college so it would be a good experience. I just get lost with all the compatible stuff, I wouldn't want to buy loads of parts and get stuck with them as they are incompatible.

I'm not fussed about an OS, I can get that others ways.

Having a hell of a time with my custom build at the moment :cry: getting random crashes messing up my hard drives filled with personal data. Trying to recover the formatted data only for it to crash again making vista registry corrupt. Now its doing a damn memory test off its own back.
