Is this TV picture problem due to hardware or software failure?

Our TV picture occasionally goes funny (see here imgur.com/a/s…ZvY ). Sometimes it happens when we switch it on, sometimes when changing from HDMI to normal TV. Any idea whether this is a hardware or software problem? TV is still within warranty, so we are likely to go back to the retailer.

Get rid either way. Looks like hardware more than firmware but relying on TV firmware updates is a terrible idea as you can never be sure they will correct the problem. Remember to keep a diary of when this problem occurs and photographic evidence. Also tell them it's an intermittant fault so they don't fob you off with it looks fine when the so call extensively check it for 30 secs. Remember that not all faults are logged by smart TVs.

Doesn't look good, I would take it back and show them this photo, especially while it's in warranty

Thanks both. I have called technical support and sent them the picture. They will come back to me within 72 hours with a reply (i.e. repair or replacement or refund).

What make of TV is it.

It's a Digihome 49" (Tesco, and yes, you get what you pay for...). Having seen the picture I took of the fault, Tesco have been quite helpful and have offered to replace or refund. As they cannot currently replace it (OOS) they agreed to replace it with a higher-value Smart TV of same size. Ours is non-Smart. Hopefully this one will last a bit longer...

Yes sometimes you do get what you pay for and sometimes you don't. In our family we have an old Bush LCD about 8 to 10 years old. It's still going well yet my son's Samsung failed after 2,500 hours of use which would be less than a year if it was my main tv. His was a panel fault made by Sharp electronics so perhaps not Samsung's fault entirely. It's a bit of a lottery but I always buy a branded tv for my living room as that is the tv that's going to get more use. If I get one on a decent offer from Curry I usually take their extended guarantee so no worries for five years and I know about consumer law but sometimes just taking the extra warranty is an easier fight when it's more than a year old.
